Well Mugabe only has himself to blame really

He basically said he was going to have the head of military executed for his comment after Mugabe sacked the Vice President (or whatever his position was)

The country has been ran on a knife edge for years with ballot fixing, death threats and various other techniques used to rig the elections in his favour

by all accounts, the guy due to take over from Mugabe is worse. it seems Mugabe's wife has been either ran out of the country or was already out when the coup that isn't a coup happened. the idea was to stop Mugabe being able to transfer power to her, that now seems to have happened, but Mugabe is still technically in power.

I’m sure I just heard on the news that he has now admitted defeat and resigned

As monkee says though - it could have been a case of better the devil you know

Supposedly resigned haha. Yeah this whole thing could blow up much like when other err dictators shall we label them got removed from power...much like Madman Hussein, Gaddaffi and a few others.

a letter read out purportedly by Mugabe, so i'm slightly dubious about it.

the new guy is someone who oversaw Zimbabwe's involvement in the conflict in the DR of Congo and responded to the previous election to keep Mugabe in power.

he's overseen massacres and has eliminated political opposition of Mugabe's before, so he's no saint, it remains to be seen if he's going to be worse or if it's just more of the same. he is 75, so probably at least another two generations before anything else happens in Zimbabwe

to be fair, mate, the army would have done fuck all to Mugabe if he hadn't deposed the deputy and lined up Grace to succeed him.

at the very least, it will be more of the same, i'd like to believe he'll distribute the wealth but I seriously doubt a guy who's ate at that table for as long as he has gives a shit about the cannon fodder.
