Winner Of First-Ever WWE World Cup Tournament To Be Determined At Crown Jewel
By Andrew Ravens -September 17, 201827537

WWE issued the following:

RIYADH, SAUDI ARABIA and STAMFORD, Conn. — The Saudi General Sports Authority, in partnership with WWE, will present WWE Crown Jewel at the King Fahd International Stadium in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on Friday, November 2, including a Universal Championship Triple Threat Match featuring Roman Reigns, Brock Lesnar and Braun Strowman, and the first-ever WWE World Cup tournament to determine the best in the world.

General Sports Authority of Saudi Arabia Chairman His Excellency Turki Al Sheikh, WWE Chairman & CEO Vince McMahon, and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia invite the world to celebrate this signature event. Following WWE’s sold-out Greatest Royal Rumble in Jeddah in April, this is the second event as part of a long-term partnership between WWE and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

WWE Crown Jewel will stream live on WWE Network and be available on pay-per-view outside of the Middle East. Ticket availability and regional broadcast information will be announced in the coming weeks.

I like this idea, hopefully a similar deal to King of the Ring, hopefully though the winner will get some sort of reward like a title match in the future. All Braun Strowman got for his Greatest Royal Rumble match win was some pointless trophy.

Shawn Michaels/Triple H vs The Undertaker/Kane and Braun Strowman vs Roman Reigns vs Brock Lesnar are expected to be on the card too, should be a good show.

Quote WWE announced today that their upcoming Crown Jewel event scheduled in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia has been moved from the King Fahd International Stadium to the King Saud University Stadium. The original stadium seats approximately 67,000 whereas the new venue is significantly smaller, holding about 25,000 fans.

I noticed this when it was advertised on SSD. I expected it to take place at King Abdullah Sports Stadium like last time and not a venue a third of that size.

Maybe the locals think one show there a year is enough and they were worried about thousands of empty seats?

I have seen a rumour they want The Rock in a match there. If anyone can give him a money no object one night only contract to perform, it's the oil rich Saudis so I wouldn't be ruling it out happening, if he's up for it.

You know? My dumb ass has only just put 2 and 2 together just a few days ago that the reason we're getting the women's only PPV is because of this male only PPV the Saudis are enforcing.

I wonder how many more of these PPVs wwe will be doing in Saudi Arabia? Will that be equivalent to the number of women's only PPVs we see as well? Or will the womens ppv thing take off if evolution does well?

Quote And here is the updated WWE Crown Jewel card:
WWE Universal Title Triple Threat Match
Roman Reigns vs. Braun Strowman vs. Brock Lesnar
    WWE Title Match
    AJ Styles vs. Daniel Bryan
    Tag Team Match
Undertaker & Kane vs. Shawn Michaels & Triple H
    8-Man World Cup Tournament
Featuring: John Cena, Kurt Angle, Randy Orton, Jeff Hardy, Shinsuke Nakamura or Rey Mysterio, 2 Raw Superstars TBA, 1 Smackdown Superstar TBA
It's not looking a great card headlined by another match involving the same three guys.
We've a tag team match with four past it guys taking up match time.
A world cup tournament to find the best in the world where all four guys are from the same country.

I think it’s a great card. A tag match featuring four legends one of whom is making his return to the ring after eight years, a wrestling dream match in Bryan vs Styles, a decent Universal title match and a tournament featuring some top names, although I do agree the World Cup name is dumb if it’s not going to be a mix of nationalities.

The Saudis are paying big money for big names, I wouldn’t be against WWE having a one off show each year where some veteran talents return for one night, would be a good bit of nostalgia.

Bryan vs Styles is the only match that really looks great. The rest is mostly just fan service for the Saudis. Looking forward to Evolution more, tbh.

There's a lot at play here. First and foremost, Linda McMahon is in government with Trump so given that he has chosen not to act it would put her in a very difficult position should her husband back out of a very lucrative deal.

Added to that is the fact that we're yet to be presented with evidence of government wrongdoing on Saudi Arabia's part. I'm hearing a lot of "there is evidence" stories but no "here it is" as of yet.

WWE are exploring their options but threats from sponsors is a storm they believe that they can weather. Also, as yet this has had no impact whatsoever on WWE network subscribers so the actual risk business wise is minimal.

The contract for the dirty Saudi money will be water tight, so I don't see it getting cancelled even though talent will care more about their safety than the payday.

A family friendly product can't really be seen putting on a show in a country where someone has just got chopped up for using his freedom of speech.

The evidence against them is as big as Russia with the Salisbury incident. They can't deny what they have done.

It's a tough situation as there's no evidence of the government doing any wrong doing then it makes not going difficult.

If there is a way to ensure the wrestlers safety then by all means get them over there but if you can't then Vince needs to really think about it what's more important the boys safety or the money generated from Saudi Arabia.

The other option is to simply post pone the show until such time that it's safe to go back.
