WCW just didnt know what to do with him once they got him from WWE, they were quite clueless.

WCW had too many egos backstage. Even bret had an ego. How in the world could a company work for the better of all the wrestlers if everybody wants to be on top?... Well, not EVERYBODY.

Bret still has an ego. And it's still stopping him admitting he was unprofessional in Montreal. And that he wasn't half the worker he thinks he was.

Pretty much all the old farts in WCW who were once on top off WWE wanted to stay on top whether it was Hogan, Savage, Nash, Bret Hart, Sid Viscious or even Piper for that matter, they all wanted to remain on top and refused to lay down for one anuffa, only to Hogan who had a clause sayen he could do whatever he practically wanted, thus why u never saw Bret and Hogan have a match in WWE and WCW.

gonna bump this but I can bring it down to 2 reasons

1.none of the main event guys except perhaps Sting and Goldberg would wrestle him.

2. Goldbergs stiff kick that caused the severe injury to Bret.

The short answer would be because he fucking outright sucks, but I'll attempt to elaborate.

In WWE he was a big fish in a small pond, so when he went to WCW it was a culture shock to learn he wasnt the biggest name in the locker room.

Also, Shawn Michaels defines his whole career, without HBK he was nothing.

Probably because he never did anything. He joined the nWo and followed Hogan around. Same thing happened to Hennig, Virgil, etc.

Few reasons for this: (not sure if was said before but I aint reading what everyone wrote before)

1. He lost his passion by the time he rolled into WCW. The whole falling out with Mcmahon made him hate wrestling

2. WCW signed him just to hurt WWF and not because they wanted to add Bret Hart to the roster so they never planned to use him effectively

3. He didnt have Bischoff's ear like he had Mcmahon's ear. Im sorry but I am a believer that Hart played politics to back in the WWF circa early to mid 90s just like "The Kliq" did

4. WCW didnt value workrate when it came to their main event picture as only Flair and Sting were considered Great in-ring wrestlers that main evented ppvs at the time

5. His hatred of Hogan in real life going in ruined any chance of having a successful run in WCW

1) His character at this point was stale, WCW like WWE had gone in a more edgy, adult-themed direction which Harts more wholesome character didnt really fit.

2) WCW was dominated by the NWO and Goldberg was red hot as the top face, there wasnt really room for Bret Hart.

3) He didnt have the right kind of talent to work with, Bret vs Owen Hart, Davey Boy Smith, Shawn Michaels and Steve Austin were classics. He wasnt going to get the same quality from Goldberg and Kevin Nash etc.

4) No Vince Mcmahon. He said before Montreal Vince was like father-figure to him and that offered him a huge comfort zone in WWE, he had Vinces ear and had alot of creative input and control over his matches and storylines in WWE. In WCW it was new territory, he didnt know the management and wasnt surrounded by his family.

5) Bret does hold a grudge and having one against someone as powerfull in WCW as Hulk Hogan probably didnt help matters.

He failed in WCW because they didn't know how to use him. They had him join the nWo(twice, I believe; black and white with Hogan, then black and silver with Jeff Jarrett, Scott Steiner, Kevin Nash, and Scott Hall) instead of having him be a face and feuding with the big names. Instead, they have him go heel and feud with Sting(which was decent, but not as good as it could/should have been), and had "Hitman" bounce all over the place storyline-wise. He was the best wrestler of his era(including scrubs like Hogan, Flair, and others) and could work with anybody, getting them over. Instead, they give him shit storylines and opponents who are so awful, they hurt their opponents legitimately(Goldberg).
