Norman the Lunatic

Mike Shaw worked a dozen or more gimmicks in his long career. He first gained some real attention in Stu Hart's Stampede promotion as Makhan Singh, an Arab sympathizer. Singh had a classic feud with Owen Hart.

In 1989, Shaw arrived in WCW and was named Norman the Lunatic. Originally Norman was supposed to be a crazed wild man that only Teddy Long could control. But Norman quickly got over with the crowds and developed a spot where he would turn all sweet when given a teddy bear. Norman turned face and was redubbed Norman the Maniac. (Shaw said in an interview that at one point the fans were bringing Norman 200 teddy bears a week.)

Typical Norman match:

But when Ole Anderson took over as booker, Ole decided to scrap the revamp the character. Despite the objections of Jim Ross, Terry Funk, Lex Luger, Sting and many others, the beloved mental patient was dropped and became Trucker Norm, to honor his over-the-road truck driving father (kayfabe.) The character-change effectively erased all of Norman's fan support.

Shaw jumped to the short-lived GWF in Dallas. He returned to his Makhan Singh character and joined the evil Cartel stable. His stable-mates included Cactus Jack and Scott Anthony.

After a run in Mexico, Shaw joined WWF. He was given the gimmick of Friar Ferguson the mad monk. The New York Catholic Church complained about the character and WWF quickly dropped it. Shaw was repackaged. Originaly he was going to be a masked monster that had crawled up from the sewers. But before the character appeared, Big Van Vader hit WCW and Vince decided the the sewer monster mask looked too similiar. By most accounts, Shaw was the one that took the remaining costume of the aborted monster and came up with Bastion Booger.

Ice Train

Ice Train appeared with WCW in 1993. He was given a steady push and made his PPV debut at Fall Brawl 1993. Although the following month at Halloween Havoc, he was teamed with the Shockmaster.

Ice Train returned to WCW in Febuary 1996. His return match was against Scott Norton, the match ended with a double-clothesline after both men knocked the other out with a clothesline. That led the two to form the tag team Fire & Ice. The team went on to feud with the Steiner Brothers.

Fire & Ice didn't last very long. By September 1996, Norton & Ice Train were feuding. The feud was never fully resolved. Norton won at Hog Wild and Ice Train won at Fall Brawl. After that, Ice Train became a regular on the syndicated WCW Pro and WorldWide. He appeared occassionally on Nitro to job.

In 2000, Ice Train was brought into the New Blood stable and renamed M.I. Smooth. He used the Smooth character until WCW was sold to WWF. Shortly after the merger, Ice Train retired from wrestling.
