So this Christmas we got the kids a PlayStation 4 with a bunch of PS3 remasters. Games like Last of Us, God of War, BioShock trilogy all remastered, but the one that has stuck out the most was the Nathan Drake chronicles, Uncharted 1-3 remastered as well as 4 for the PS4.

I finally caved and decided to get the PS4 for the kids when I realized how many exclusive games there really were for the system, and when I decided I would really enjoy The Last of Us remaster. I got it, loved it, and then since my daughter was playing Last of Us after I finished, and she watched some of it, and my older boy was playing God of War, I decided to try Uncharted 4 just to see if it was any good, (my son said he really wanted to play it a number of times this last summer when it first came out) and I was blown away that it was made by the same people that made Last of Us, but that I actually liked it more.

Im not really a console gamer, if I can get a game on the PC, in all likelihood that's where I'm gonna play it, but tbh, I think I had more fun playing that game than just about any I can remember in years. Now I still consider Mass Effect to be the better series, but its got me interested in a different way than Uncharted. With Mass Effect I am awed, with Uncharted I'm yelling at the TV and laughing that I just survived running away from a truck that tried to run me over and that I got away.

I've really had FUN playing this game, like I used to as a kid when I was playing Super Mario Bros. 3 on the NES. I got excited, I was ooohing and aaaahing as I tried to avoid that truck, when I was jumping from car to car to make my way to the head of the caravan and leaving burning wrecks behind me, I was laughing at how awesome the experience was.

Playing Uncharted 4 was like playing a part in a great action movie. It was like Indiana Jones only funny and entertaining, it was like playing Tombraider only not boring.

The characters, Nathan Drake, his brother Sam, Nathans mentor Victor "Sully" Sullivan, and Nathans wife Elana were such great characters, as was the antagonist, Nadine Ross. The other guy was just an ass, ultimately forgettable.

I don't remember the last time I beat a game and let out a huge sigh of relief because I was holding my breath and didn't even realize it and say out loud: I gotta do that again!

After finishing the game I had made up my mind, this was a series I wanted to play through from start to finish.

Initially I thought I'd try the latest and greatest and if was good enough maybe I'd step back and play #3 and see how it held up, but 4 was so incredible I knew I wanted to start at the beginning and to hell with technological drawbacks.

Sure enough #1 did have some faults, and the story wasn't quite as good, but the remaster graphics were still quite good, and it featured Nathan, Sully and Elana, and ultimately, for a game first in its series where it was obvious there were going to be some major improvements needed, it was really quite good.

I blazed through one and for the most part had a pretty good time of it and then immediately moved on to two.

Holy crap! 2 was almost better than 4! All the stupid problems 1 had technologically were gone already, the story was a lot better, the run and gun scenes were implemented, the caravan advancement scene was there all in a great new setting. It was awesome, and I had nearly as much fun with 2 as I did playing 4, and this game was several years older!

So then I played 3. Man what a high standard this series has set.

Keeping in mind that I spoiled some things for myself by playing 4 first, and obviously 4 had the best graphics and production quality, and 4 was MY introduction to the gameplay mechanics, 4 was my clear favorite. However, looking back I think 2 was such an incredible leap forward from 1 (and 1 was good, just... Not great) and that 3 didn't improve anything and 4 only improved the graphics (a lot!) I would say 2 is the best of the series, but 3 and 4 are so close in overall quality to 2 that it really is just a standard of excellence that is being held to, and the stories are what differentiate themselves the most, as it should.

On one hand I had a great Christmas break with the kids while we played through the Uncharted series, I'm also a bit annoyed with myself for not getting into this series sooner.

I was just watching my son play through 4 a second time and we were both still wowed by the graphics and how funny Nathan is and how fun the game is to play.

I really cannot recommend this series enough, but I would also recommend starting with 1 because while mostly episodic, the relationship with Nathan and Elana does progress from game to game and is one story arch that does break that otherwise episodic nature and instead make it one continuous story.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Has anyone else played this game series??? I hope I'm not the only one. What did you think of it? Did you have as much fun as I did?
Also, can't wait for the next game with Chloe and Nadine as the main characters.
Ive just played through Uncharted's 2 & 3 on the PS3, and yes there are obvious comparisons towards the Tomb raider games.
If Im honest though I didnt enjoy 3 (Drake's Deception) as much as 2 (among thieves).
Yes there were some neat ideas in there like showing Drake as a kid and how he met Sully in the first place. But what was the point in bringing back the Australian bird for only half of the game, and whats with the relationship between Drake and the blond one ? They finish one game walking off into the sunset together, and its like they hardly know each other when the next game starts.
And I got sick of all the fighting bits in this game, where the enemies surround you and it just turns into a load of button mashing to punch and kick your way out. This for me is a poor new idea that they didnt need to bring into the game.
I would say 3 isn't as good as 2, but it was still pretty great IMO. However, I much preferred Uncharted 4 to even 2.
Chloe is the future of the franchise it seems though, which is good by me as she is also the voice of Morrigan in the dragon age series. I can't wait until the Uncharted 4 dlc is released, playing as Chloe should be fun.
