...The Ramblings of the Forum IDIOT...

They will most probably be few and far between and they will most probably be about anything; anything that sparks something in me. Anyway, this time it’s going to be a Social Comment and why I think Celebrity Big Brother 2014 (CBB2014) and it’s sister program Celebrity Big Brother Bits on the Side (CBBBOTS) were the perfect examples of Society as it is today, Society gone by and why Society today is far worse off than what it used to be in the 20th Century.

Here I am a week later still going over what exactly happened inside that House and wondering why it is that I’m still finding it as intriguing as when I first began to watch it. I don’t usually watch Big Brother, Celebrity or otherwise. I have always regarded “Reality TV” as the scum that’s risen from the bottom of a barrel and is floating across the good stuff beneath it, and if I’m brutally honest, I still can’t help thinking that I’m right to feel that way.

However, every once in a while Reality TV raises a scenario that intrigues me and CBB2014, (as well as CBBBOTS) did that this year. Admittedly the only people I recognised were Jim Davidson, Linda Nolan and Lionel Blair. I wasn’t surprised I hadn’t known anything of the others because they were all in bands and shows that had never interested me or I hadn’t heard of. Anyway, I don’t know if CBB deliberately designed it the way it was or whether it had been an accident, but either way, you literally had the makings of a family in there. Lionel being the Grandfather, Jim being the Dad, Linda the Mum and the others “the kids” and it played out that way, though some almost immediately assigned themselves the role, such as Linda did.

Had Jim Davidson not been in that House this year, not only would I have not watched, (because he was the ONLY reason I was watching in the first place), but CBB2014 would not have been the absolute hit that it became for me, because, not only did he represent a Society gone by, but he was the absolute catalyst in revealing why Society Today is far worse off than it was in the 20th Century. The best thing is, he didn’t have to change one iota to achieve it.

As the days went on he outed Lionel as a representative of a Society that had long since been extinct, (an aloof, prim and proper, well-mannered Society). An extinct Society trying its best to survive in one that has no respect whatsoever for it. It’s why you had him miming the strip tease and dragging out an invisible huge penis in front of “the kids” – why he went gung-ho in the X-rated room. “The Kids” clapped and cheered, but in reality who in this world wants to watch their 82 year old Granddad do such things? The only foothold Lionel had in the House and what it means to really survive in Society today, was to become insular and selfish, forget what he was doing, finger point and accuse others, even going so far as degrading a supposed friend of 40 years.

Jim Davidson also outed Linda as part of his own Society (a no-nonsense, no frills, say it as it is, PC-less, what you see is what you get Society) and what his Society would need to do to survive in the one that’s around today. Linda quickly became a favourite in the House because she almost immediately adapted to what it took to survive in today’s Society. At the base of her lies was truth, but it was never the whole truth and nothing but the truth – but then again it never needed to be because Society today doesn’t look beyond what they’re seeing and what they’re being told. She too became insular, selfish and, surprisingly, paranoid. She forgot her own Society because this new one served her a whole lot better than that one. It fuelled her hate to a point where she felt comfortable to hate

When Linda and Jim got on in the House it was because it was the same Society coming together, from the same viewpoint, and it was the most honest Linda would ever be in the House.

As for “The Kids” I think there were three Jim respected. Olly was the new man and a possible representative of a Future Society, one he found curious but not offensive because he’d never found Olly to be that way; Casey because she was Daddy’s girl and she had traits from his own Society, and Dappy, because he simply was as honest and as truthful as he could be, traits that are at the base of Jim’s Society.

As time went on, one by one he outed them all. He never imposed his own Society on anyone, but he fought tooth and nail against being assimilated into this new and offensive one. Every now and again he would show them what their Society was like, but he realised he was preaching to the Choir because he had to be them to do that and when you have a Society so insular and selfish, they’re not going to get the message.

He did all this until eventually with the last five “kids”, he gathered them all into an embrace and simply invited them into his own Society – a Society that looked beyond the words and focused on intent; a Society that was not afraid of calling out the bullshit; a Society that never looked at someone else as being nothing more than an object of hate; a Society that when holding out a hand to help it was genuine and selfless

There was one most telling and revealing conversation that occurred in the House and it was one that happened between Dappy, a representative of Jim’s Society, and Luisa, a representative of Today’s Society – and it was about Sexism.

Dappy and Luisa had had an argument about how Society views a Woman sleeping with Five Men in one night and how Society views a Man sleeping with Five Women in one night, though Luisa turned it into something personal because it was the only way she could fight back (indicative of Today’s Society). The apology from Dappy and their conversation that stemmed from that was hugely indicative of why Society today is far worse off than it was in the 20th Century.

Dappy apologised, not that he was in the wrong, but it was him to do that. He then went on to explain his apology. He said that by her accusing him of sexism she had firmly placed him in the same spotlight as the one Society views Jim Davidson when it came to sexism, and that it had hurt him. What should be noted is that he wasn’t saying that Jim was sexist, he wasn’t saying Society was wrong to accuse Jim, he was simply saying it was how Society viewed Jim Davidson in regards to sexism.

However, that’s not what Luisa got from that short speech.

The moment Dappy mentioned he was aware of how Today’s Society viewed Jim Davidson in regards to sexism, her eyebrows shot to the top of her head and you could almost taste the utterly, shocked “oh… my… god… he knows? He’s aware of that?” coming out of her. What I think was indicative of Today’s Society is what Luisa said in reply.

Instead of accepting Dappy’s apology and apologising herself for hurting him, which is what I believe is appropriate when you like someone and/or when you’re wrong, she instead told Dappy that things like that will always happen if he were to stick around, with the likes of Jim Davidson, behaving like some long, lost puppy – In other words instead of offering a consolation and an apology of her own, she attempted to further hurt Dappy simply for her own gain and just because Jim was indeed her Nemesis inside that House, the only one who’d stood up against her Society saying “I like mine better” and revealing many quality reasons why it was the truth.

All in all, Today’s Society is all about getting what you can get solely for yourself and if you hurt/destroy anyone along the way, then so be it. It does not care for anyone unless something can be gained from it; even if it is false love and kindness. When Jim’s Society held out a hand it wasn’t because of what they could get out of it, it was what that other person could get which is where true love and friendship lies. More importantly, it is wholly indicative of why Society Today is far worse off than it was in the 20th Century.

I didn't read your post (except for the last line, which tells me everything I need to know about your post, you old-ass man/woman), I just wanted to tell you how relieved I am that you're the OP. I saw the thread title and thought #Heel must have started a Writer's Perspective series.

Yeah these ramblings were a bit "rambly" for me to focus on. And I don't have an idea what any of the Big Brother references meant.

I did miss though: you stated at the beginning that you don't watch the shows for whatever reason, but I missed where you explained why you're watching it now.

It's what the titles says. You don't need to have watched CBB to get the references.

If something is so intriguing to you, don't you want to watch that something again just to understand why you found it so intriguing?
