As I said before, what I believe might completely contrary to... well... most everyone here. The difference is the opinion, and opinions are rarely ever changed nor should they be forced to change. I'll accept it Big smile. I don't think The Beatles are overrated, but what does my opinion matter? Oh yeah... (   )

Ok Raven after reading yours and others' comments on Nirvana (and keeping in mind that I agree they are a tad overrated musical wise) I have a series of questions.

1. Do you think that a new musical sound developed/became popular in the early 90's?

2. If the answer to question #1 is yes, then do you think that the group that spearheaded that should get additional credit for such in addition to being recognized for their musical prowess (if any)?

3. If the answer to question #2 is yes (or even if it's not) what band(s) would that be?

Just wanted to get your thoughts.

1. No. Grunge is pretty directly derived from 70s punk, and slowly evolved into what today is known as grunge. I don't see it as any kind of radical change, and particularly in the case of the early 90s Seattle bands, most of them copied pretty directly from The Pixies (I think they're called). If anybody is to blame for grunge, it's them, but at the same time, they weren't so radically different from a lot of other less famous bands around at the time.

2. If yes to 1, no. Nirvana spearheaded it at the time, sure, but did not originate it, nor are they even the most popular example of such a band (see Pearl Jam). By admission, they clearly stole their style from earlier post-punk bands at the time.

3. If yes to 2, The Pixies. And maybe Black Flag. If you're stretching, you could probably say Sonic Youth too (another band that heavily influenced most later Seattle bands).

And HBKDX, while it may be true I can't change your opinion, I would like you to point out how I am wrong (because if I'm not, you've kind of lost the argument and your opinion is invalid on every level).

I agree with all your points. I knew that Nivana took the grunge style from 70's bands; but without a doubt Nirvana is more famous or well known than the Pixies or Black Flag. Nirvana popularized that sound and brought it mainstream (along with groups like Pearl Jam), paving the way for other bands of a similar style to follow. But that would prove your point right that they are overrated since other earlier bands perhaps should have gotten that notoriety instead.

I love everyone of these bands minus Evanesence.

For me music is an art, from the songwriting to the creation of a riff or solo. It's there way of expressing themselves. A band like Tool (who I fucking love) compose the music first and then Maynard tries to create lyrics that fit the music. A lot of what he writes has a different meaning than the obvious answer that you see in front of you. Also anyone who can write a song in fibonacci scequence gets my blessing.

By the way being form Liverpool means I instantly love The Beatles

I thought of another singer who I have to say, is even more overrated than the Beatles; and he is definitely a "snobby arsehole"; Michael Jackson. I mean what the fuck; why were people worshipping at his feet for? Granted, he is an okay singer with a few good tunes; and I do like a few songs by him, especially "Smooth Criminal" and "Billie Jean", and "Say, Say, Say" with Sir Paul McCartney; and he has two good dance moves; but beyond that he's average and his fame and notoriety went waaaaaaay more then he deserved and I don't even thing his videos are all that great. I have no clue how Thriller sold so many records. I can think of about twenty R&B singers that are better musically (Prince, for example) and I even like Janet Jackson better then Michael.

Most overrated singer in the history of time.

And that's not even getting into his penchant for young boys.
