LOS ANGELES: Serena Williams, a former world number one and a 13-time Grand Slam singles champion, had emergency surgery to remove a blood clot from her lungs, a representative for the tennis star said Wednesday.

Nicole Chabot told People magazine that the 29-year-old American underwent an emergency operation at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles on Monday and continues to be hospitalized so physicians can monitor her recovery.

“Monday Serena Williams underwent emergency treatment at Cedars for a hematoma she suffered as a result of treatment for a more critical situation,” Chabot told the magazine.

“Last week, Serena suffered from a pulmonary embolism which was discovered upon her return to L.A. She had been in New York for doctor appointments for the ongoing issues with her foot.

“Doctors are continuing to monitor her situation closely to avoid additional complications.

”Williams has undergone two operations on her right foot since it was cut by glass at a restaurant. She has not played a top-level match since capturing the Wimbledon title last July.

Fox Sports is now reporting that based upon estimated recovery time for a pulmonary embolism, Serena wouldn't be able to return for atleast a year.  At best, she would be trying to make a comeback at age 30 and not having a match in over 18 months.  So now the sports reporters are also speculating that she might have to retire.

It's a shame how many setbacks this great player has had in her career.

She's a legend of the sport, but same time would have achieved way more if it wasn't for injuries and illness.

If she has to retire I reckon she will concentrate more on her fashion career.

Should retire, shes done all there is to in the sport and I reckon she'd make a good commentator, but yeah her body has been through a LOT and I reckon she would be smart to call it quits.
