Rusev won't win the Rumble, but if he ends up down to say the final 5 with fans right behind him believing maybe it COULD happen, then whoever throws him out would get so much heel heat his babyface turn would be nicely completed.

Quote Rusev Day vs. The New Day: Everyone in this match is wearing a Christ-mas themed costume. Rusev chases Kofi around to start as Kofi taunts him. English tags in and Kofi dropkicks him. Rusev runs in but Kofi throws him outside. The New Day grabs a red bag from ringside and they start throwing out tshirts to people in the crowd. Rusev and English drop Woods and Kofi from behind. English and Kofi are the legal men and English is beating down the New Day member. Rusev tags in and continues the assault on Kofi. Xavier finally gets the hot tag and lays into English with kicks. Kofi and Rusev come in, and Rusev dumps both Kofi and Woods to the outside. English and Rusev now go to the announce table and start pulling stuff off of it. English and Rusev set up a plate of The New Day's pancakes with whip cream on it, and English tries to slam Xavier's face into it but Xavier escapes. Kofi hits a suicide dive on Rusev at ringside, and Xavier and Kofi slam English's face into the pancakes. Back in the ring, Woods hits a flying elbow drop on English for the three count.

Winners: The New Day

No tag team has been more over than New Day in the face role for ages, but last night Rusev and English without a doubt had more crowd support.

Never more so than to the tune of New Day rocks, the crowd chanting Ru-sev day.

the backstage segment was really good, but WWE need to do something better with Rusev, since when he went heel and said everyone was on the naughty list, the boos were very muted, but I laughed at English's reaction and Rusev comforting him after.  they as a team are very over with the fans, so they need to turn them both at some point.

The backstage segment was brilliant and the reactions they are getting , specifically when Rusev day is mentioned, are phenomenal

It was a shame about how the match turned into a bit of a comedy fest because i think this gimmick works best when Rusev is comical out of the ring but an absolute machine once he steps between the ropes

Loved the backstage segment, Rusev Day is becoming the highlight of Smackdown and they have great chemistry with New Day in comedy segments like this.

The match did descend into silliness but I found it quite entertaining. I think this is all building to Rusev going full babyface as it’s been said before he had a comical side and that is definitely more apparent now and I think exploring this side of his character will see him morph into a face.

It's only recently that Rusev has been allowed a little comedic freedom, since being paired with Aiden English in fact, so the comedy Christmas match was a good thing to establish that he's more laid back now.

Rusev, more than anything, is showing immense commitment to the cause right now and the fans are backing him to the hilt given how quickly every Rusev Day shirt in the world sold out. They are doing something with him. He's heavily involved now, just not in the main event scene. That's fine; not everybody needs to be.

I'd expect him to have a great US title run next year, as that title is quickly becoming synonymous with Rusev and rightly so. He could do for the US title what The Miz does for the IC title. I'm confident he'll be in the chamber for 2019.

After watching Raw, SmackDown and NXT this week all in one sitting, while skipping crap that didn't interest me on Hulu, I got to say SmackDown was the highlight of the week, and from it, Rusev in Chicago was the highlight of that.

The Chicago fans really were hot for SmackDown as a whole compared to Raw. First Bryan came out and I was mentioning he was just as over as Rock, Austin or Hogan ever were. Then Rusev came out and all but topped that, and then New Day got an amazingly good reaction too.

Hopefully Rusev IS booked more like Kurt Angle back in the day, where he was a good out of the ring but an asskicker in the ring. Rusev could really be someone big for the WWE if they keep him in that role.

I think also with the fact hes super over - the fact they are having them lose regularly seems to be upping the intensity from the fans to see them get a win and as a result they are getting better and better reactions from the crowd.

I still think they need to do something with them soon before the interest runs out

Having English there is a great way to have Rusev lose without Rusev actually losing. If he continues to be involved in great matches like that on Smackdown his stock can only rise. I'd like to see his team share some screen time with Lana and Tamina though, to share the effect if nothing else.

Rusev should have been in the US championship tournament, giving us a Rusev vs Mahal finish in which Mahal goes over. I don't expect them to be tag champs any time soon. They may in fact be next fed to the Bludgeon Brothers but that will only make him more popular with the fans.

Faces get over with losses now but they become stars with wins. It's not an easy balance to maintain but they do have a firm favourite with Rusev that they need to capitalise on.

Yeah it’s smart booking. English acts as the fall guy protecting Rusev, but as English is mostly about the comedy losses don’t really harm him as fans don’t tune in to see him win matches, that’s Rusev’s job.

I agree it would have been much better to have Rusev in the tournament having him defeat Woods then go all the way to the finals where he could have lost to Mahal perhaps with some help from the Singh’s to keep Rusev strong. Perhaps this could still happen with English side-stepping to allow Rusev to compete in the tournament?

That's a fair comment actually. It would be a good way to change their minds too and show that they heard the fans last week. I find it unlikely but I would be pleasantly surprised.
