Randy Couture has officially returned to MMA... just not as a fighter. Couture has signed a deal with Bellator. First up on Couture's deal he will be a coach upon a Bellator reality show that will air on Spike TV. Further details on Couture's contract with Bellator have not been released. But there is a press conference set for next week were more details might come.

Now that Bellator is owned by Viacom (parent company of several cable networks including Spike) this maybe a sign of things to come. Viacom is a massive corporation with deep pockets. If they believe there's money to be made in MMA, they're going to have the resources to get it. Plus, Bellator is never going to have to worry about securing a TV deal again.

Not to be overshadowed, Dana White has responded to the news.

Quote According to White, Couture isn’t what he seems. His public persona doesn’t match the real man.

“Randy Couture comes off as the greatest guy in the world, Captain America.  He’s the furthest thing from it, and I’m happy to not be in business with him anymore,” said White during the UFC 156 media day on Thursday. “Now I don’t have to be in business with him ever again.”

White's unhappiness with Couture has far more to do with their legal dispute back in 2007 over Couture's contract. Couture announced he was leaving UFC (while still Heavyweight Champion) and claimed UFC had under-cut his pay. Nearly a year later both sides had reached a new deal. Couture was still acknowledged as being the UFC Heavyweight Champion (although they had also awarded an interim championship.) Couture's return fight was against Brock Lesnar. Lesnar won the title via TKO in the second round.

I love how White criticizes Couture's superhero media image. Especially since it was his company under his direction that built that image and marketed it. UFC was active in billing Couture as a real life superhero and they referred to him as Captain America.

I am going to go a bit off track here and say that I respect the hell out of Dana White. The man is a marketing genius, and reminds me so much of Vince McMahon in the fact that both men were able to visualize something they loved moving away from the carnivals and side show attractions into mainstream and household name areas. They also seem to have the same mentality that goes with "We're moving forward, and if you're not with me then I'm running you over". This is like VKM's practice of burying wrestlers subtly when they move to a different promotion, and it's ruthlessly genius.

Well, Dana White never hid the fact that he has a lot of respect for Vince McMahon as a businessman and I'm not surprised that they share the same philosophy.

Still, like it or not, not a shabby move from Bellator. Now, they don't only have to count on King Mo to have more exposure.
