OK, I understand that I'm being brave putting this in the 'sport' section, but I feel personally like it is a sport, as well an expressive dance form and gymnastic form as well.
Pole fitness is becoming one of the biggest growing fitness initiatives in the UK and US, with more and more people giving it a try. There are also numerous people petitioning to get it into the Olympics as a vertical gymnastics sport. It's also more popular with men than would be expected, due to them having the stronger upper body strength required for the more complicated moves.

For those of you who are still convinced that it's just for strippers or 'gentleman's clubs', here is a link to the highlights from US Pole Dance Federation 2009 Nationals. If you've never seen a professional, you've never seen it done properly.

And this next link is to Felix Cane, the current World Pole Dancing Champion, performing her winning routine to Guns and Roses 'This I love.' ((Skip along to about 0:34))

I understand it's getting more and more popular for fitness, one of my ex-schoolfriends credits her doing of it for her getting back into shape after having her child.

To me its an excersise, not a sport, but thats just my opinion... Who knows, we might actually get an International Pole Dancing comp happening down the road, especially with how popular it is getting.

I see it more as a performance art than a sport but just my personal opinion.

We already do, that's what the 2nd video link is - from the World Pole Dancing Championships. Very much international!

**Bump**

I'm bumping this thread up as I'm currently working on a routine of my own, trying to choreograph as best I can whilst learning new moves. Hopefully it'll be here soon! x

Hope so, providing my choreography works and I can remember the routine well enough. I would consider it a birthday present, as it'll probably take that long to get it sorted.

As promised, for those who are interested, a short little pole dance thing for the TUPers. Not the proper routine I promised, as I'll get someone else to film that, rather than do it myself.
I apologise for:
*The sideways-ness at the beginning.
*The state of my hair (it's not quite long enough yet and I've already been practising for a good half hour)
*The sound quality of the music (Waking Up in Vegas - Katy Perry)
*The lack of my head for most of it (resting the camera on the DVD shelf which isn't quite high enough when I'm in big shoes.)
Oh, and the squeaking is actually my skin pulling on the pole, so you may feel my pain at points lol.
