Quote What’s the story?

According to a WWE source, Vince McMahon isn’t happy with the build and fitness of United States Champion, Kevin Owens. The source said that McMahon is “so fed up” with Owens being overweight and not lifting weights the way he’d like that he has requested the Canadian superstar to work in a suit. The New Face of America has been wearing a suit recently, but this has only been the case for promos and guest announcing segments. Now, Vince reportedly wants him to “work the matches in a suit” as well.

The background

Owens certainly does not have a prototypical WWE body, but that hasn’t stopped him from being successful. Ever since he joined the company in 2014, the Prize Fighter has captured several championships and created numerous memorable moments.Vince McMahon has been known to favour wrestlers with a more chiselled physique, but those standards have been relaxed in recent years. In the past few months, both Owens and Bray Wyatt have held major titles in the WWE, and neither man is built like Hulk Hogan or The Ultimate Warrior.

The heart of the matter

In addition to the change in attire, Vince is also supposedly behind the recent trim of Owens’ beard. If both of these changes do stem from the top boss’ displeasure, Owens would be best served to listenHowever, if KO can be successful with a more “everyman” appearance, he might connect better with the fans. Even though he is a heel, it always helps when the fans are interested in your top champions and workers.

What’s next?

The fans are left to read the “tea leaves,” so to speak, to see if this trend of wearing a suit continues. Owens wore one before WrestleMania when he started to work more openly alongside Triple H and Samoa Joe, but he still donned his traditional sleeveless T-shirt and athletic shorts for matches. If he begins to wear something different for in-ring action or continues to keep his beard trimmed close, it could be a sign that there is heat backstage.

Author’s take

If Vince has actually requested changes to Owens’ attire because he doesn’t like the superstar’s physique, that is ridiculously petty. Despite all his accomplishments in the wrestling business, he has to realise that most fans aren’t concerned with such things. The possibility also remains that this was merely a brief outburst from the chairman and that KO won’t see any long-term effects. The signs in the booking point to this being true as KO is a champion with a planned feud against AJ Styles, one of the company’s top workers. Hopefully, any concerns about Vince’s feelings toward KO are overblown, and this doesn’t become a major issue.

Having Owens work in a suit would be ridiculous. Having him wear one for promos and non wrestling stuff is fine as it's traditional heel attire and the feeling is it helps to gain heat and gives a talent more of a championship worthy look, but wrestling in a suit would be dumb, I've always been traditional preferring talents to wear proper wrestling attire to make them appear as legitimate athletes, I don't even like it when guys like Cena wrestle in denim shorts or Ambrose in his tatty jeans and tank top but having a guy compete in a suit which apart from anything else must be uncomfortable to do is just crazy and unneeded.

It's fair to say Owens should put in a few more hours in the gym, I don't think anyone would expect him to be shredded or look like he's chiselled out of stone but his bulging gut and couch potato appearance could be improved. He's always been on the husky side but when he was down in NXT I seem to remember him having a bit more muscle definition than he does now so seems he's got lazy in the gym and let himself go a bit. He should look at Bray Wyatt for inspiration, he's still a large set guy but has worked to get himself in fairly good shape for a man of his build.
One thing is for sure though and that is you can't question KO's cardio, he's one of the top workers in WWE having countless great matches that are often lengthy and he never appears blown up or runs out of steam.

The problem some people have is no matter what they try, they are just naturally meant to be a certain shape. KO has masses of stamina and is obviously one of these that will never be one with a superb physique. Sure he could possibly drop a few pounds to make him look a bit slimmer, but that's hard to do when you have to travel the world for what you do. It isn't easy breaking cycles, Vince knows that....

On the flip side I can't see this really being said by the company as they'll be opening themselves up for all kinds of discriminatory trouble.

But this isn't the first time Vince has criticised a talent for his lack of physical conditioning, Big Show was banished to OVW during his earlier WWE years to attempt to shift weight and Chris Hero was released because they were unhappy with his physique so it wouldn't surprise me if there is some truth to this story.

As you say some people are just born to be a certain size/shape but looking at Owens I think it's pretty clear he rarely hits the weights so there is room for improvement.

Making him wrestle in a suit is ludicrous though, surely they could just pick out some more suitable wrestling attire that is more flattering to his rounded physique. I would suggest wearing shirts that aren't quite so figure hugging as the worst thing about his look is that gut bulging through his shirt.

okay, so, I've been thinking.

Jinder Mahal, when champion, was due to be part of the India tour, a Raw tour, and Kevin Owens was to be his challenger for the two shows there. so, on the show where Owens apparently went off-script, and after which he was sent home for complaining loudly, it might be possible there was some truth to it all.

the decision to make AJ champ was made very late in the day, the Sunday or Monday before SDL. was Owens made aware of this prior to the show on Tuesday? did he then refuse to be fed to New Day, and refuse to go back out and record the angle, and his complaints for what little of the tour he was left on, because he was pissed at missing two very lucrative pay days?

he and Mahal were the only SDL talent due for the tour, as they needed a fellow brand player to be a challenger for the title. even though there was no chance of Owens winning, it is two more tour dates than he is realistically contracted for. as it's so far away from the rest of the SDL schedule too, i'd suspect the pay would have been bigger to account for both the extra dates and the fact you're half a world away.

if there was any truth behind those rumours, this is as good a reason for his actions as any.
