For those not aware, he is a Canadian international striker who plays for the team I support, Barnsley Football Club. Last saturday in a South Yorkshire derby, he got elbowed in the head by one of our former home grown heros who now plays for our rivals Sheffield United. The referee only gave a yellow card and so didn't send him off. However things got much worse. When he got home that saturday night he felt alright (although had to be subbed off after the challenge). He couldn't drop off to sleep for vomiting and his condition took a turn for the worse.

He got taken to hospital and got told her had internal bleeding on the brain, a fractured skull and needed an emergency operation. To get rid of the internal bleeding on his brain, he's now got a 12 inch scare going from his forehead around to his ear. If he had somehow managed to fall asleep like he tried, the bleeding would have no doubt go worse and he probably would have died. He spent time in an high dependency unit and is now thankfully on a normal ward.

He's still struggling to both sleep and speak, due to being groggy. Barnsley Football Club are only in the second tier of English Football (the league behind the clubs you will have heard of like Manchester United and Arsenal And Liverpool and Chelsea), so we rarely get any national press. However because of the severe nature of the story it's made lots of national radio and television shows. Today it's on the front AND back page of the Daily Mirror.

Here is our manager talking about the incident..........

Here is a OK quality video of the challenge............

Here is a list of stories about it from the WORLD press...........

His father in law is more annoyed than most people about it all. I feel for his five year old daughter who nearly lost her dad and now has to visit him with tubes coming out of his head. Anyway there's a petition to sign against the actions of Chris Morgan that will be sent to the relevant authorities including the police here............

We have support from many of the other 91 football league teams already. Chris Morgan cannot be allowed to get away with his thug like actions. Thanks to him Hume might never play football again and if he does it won't be this season (which finishes in May, so shows how long he will be out for at a minimium). It's good to read messages on the petition from all forms. For example someone will put a message and say which team they support so it doesn't just look like Barnsley fans supporting it. There's messages from none football fans, none local people etc. Everyone is supporting the cause.

Thank you for your support

Admin,
I have just read your thread on this incident and watched the links you have posted on this. It's very clear what happened from the video on youtube I agree it that referee should of give the Sheffield player a red card and not yellow card.

Watching the video the Sheffield  player knew what he was doing because he saw Iain Hume coming for the ball.

If Barnsley Football Club take legal action against this player then I  hope  they get justice for  this Player and his family .

I will be signing the petition you have posted for us sign.

I hope Iain Hume is getting better and my thoughts are  with is  family .

Cheers

Chris Morgan is a dirty fucker who always swings around his elbows, and im sick of everyone saying "hes not that sort of player", when he clearly is, because he broke a mans skull and nearly killed him by doing his usual dirty tactics. Its an injustice if Simon Davey gets a touchline ban for speaking the truth.

* I'm hoping to get a flag like that, with the Canadian flag on and his number 7 squad number in time for me hopefully going to Preston next saturday. I can have it draped over my back.

* The "stand up for the Iain Hume" chant today even had the 472 Watford fans stood. That was great to see, football stood as one with no divide.

* Those mini flags you see were handed out for nothing to put on cars. I didn't get one because none were around when I arrived. However I know who made them (he makes anything like t shirts, flags etc to sell), so i'll get one somehow.

* Over 2,000 people on the petition is an amazing response. Justice needs to be done.

By the looks of the video, it didn't look intentional and nothing more than an accident...but Morgan has had a history of challenges like that so I wouldn't put it past him to have done it again.

* Feet planted and elbow swung around over hundred degrees with enough force to do all that damage. I'd say with his history that it was intentional.

* His sister has an hairdressers in Penistone and apparently a lot of regulars missed this week. Her business could end up in the shit guilty by association, as her brother got the business started up to save his own flesh and blood getting a bank loan.

* It's good to see it's making the news back in his homeland of Canada Clap

* The following is from the Sunday Times today, to see the condition he's in from his hospital bed..........

I'm not much of a sports follower. However from reading the various  posts it seems an absolute shame this man hasn't had some form of punishment for this. Usually in American Football and Hockey, aren't the players fined for excessive force or even suspended?

I'm glad to see that the injured player is getting some recognition in his hometown. Hopefully the league will hear their voices and do something about this situation.

That was a disgrace Morgans reaction after says it all he didnt care he was even trying to argue it wasnt a freekick.
Ian Hume just got released from hospital today so hopefully hes on his way to a full recovery.
Morgan should be banned for at least the rest of the season imo.

I'm pleased to hear that Iain Hume as been released from hospital, and I hope he on the way to a full recovery. As for Morgan I think if  there's any justice in the world he should be  banned from playing football for life. Having said that I think it's more likely he will be banned for a season or two.
Cheers

I wrote to the Football League to tell them to take further action (as number of our fans have) and got this reply..........

Quote

Thank you for your email. Let me apologise for the delay in responding to your email. The Customer Services Department has a small staff and has recently suffered from illness meaning that responding in our usual time frame has been difficult.

I understand your frustration. We are all football fans and when our team doesn’t get the decisions we feel we should get we tend to look at the referee's decisions.

Just like the players and managers, I am unable to change the referees decisions, however I can give you some information relating to referees and how we try to improve standards.

The Football League utilises the top 75 referees in the country for all its games. This is commonly referred to as the 'National Panel.' All matches are attended by a referees assessor who gives feedback to the referee after each game. In addition the assessor will provide the League's referee department with a mark out of 100 for their performance. In addition, the home and away manager also give the referee a mark out of 100. All this detail is kept on record. At the end of the season, every referee is reviewed to ensure that their performances are up to the required standard. It is possible for referees to be taken off the national list if it felt that over a sustained period of time their performances are not up to standard.

I hope this information has been of interest.

In regards to further action, if any is to be taken it would be The Football Association that would give any further penalty to Chris Morgan. The reason for this is that it is The FA who have jurisdiction relating to disciplinary matters, due to this it is not right for The Football League to comment on whether the player should receive any further sanction as this goes against any due process that may need to take place.

Thank you for your interest in The Football League

Yours sincerely

Darren Bernstein

Customer Services Manager

The Football League

Our unbiased national press (who can say what they think more than the biased local press trying to stay on the right side of both sides) said this today and there's some pictures.............

Another interview with him here, that's an audio one which you can see him talking about it...........

Do excuse his messed up Canadian accent. He's played for Tranmere (scouse accent is odd lol) and for Leicester (huge asian population) and now he's at Barnsley, so his accent is pretty mixed LOL
