taken from Wikipedia....
Golden Axe is a side-scrolling arcade hack and slash game released in 1989 by Sega for the System 16-B arcade hardware. It is the first game in the series.

The kanji that appear in the title screen read as "Senpu" (戦斧), meaning "Battle Axe"; however, both the game and the series are known as "Golden Axe", even in Japan.

The game takes place in the fictional land of Yuria, a Conan The Barbarian-style high fantasy medieval world. An evil entity known as Death Adder has captured the King and his daughter, and holds them captive in their castle. He also finds the Golden Axe, the magical emblem of Yuria, and threatens to destroy both the axe and the royal family unless the people of Yuria accept him as their ruler.

The player controls one of three warriors. The first is a battle axe-wielding dwarf, Gilius Thunderhead, from the mines of Wolud, whose twin brother was killed by the soldiers of Death Adder. Another is a male barbarian, Ax Battler, wielding a two handed broadsword looking for revenge for the murder of his mother. The last is a long-sword-wielding Tyris Flare, an amazon, whose parents were both killed by Death Adder.

Much of the game consists of the character's journey to the castle. In one of the early stages, the player saves the inhabitants of the ransacked Turtle Village, which turns out to be situated on the shell of a giant turtle. The turtle takes the characters across the sea, and they then fly to the castle itself on the back of a giant eagle. Once at the castle the player fights Death Adder, who is wielding the Golden Axe. After Death Adder is defeated, the king and his daughter are freed, but the king says that he believes Death Adder was taking orders from someone. The player then enters the castle for the last battle against Death Adder's mentor.

this was a FANTASTIC game, i loved playing this in the arcades & am very glad it made it onto compilations for the PS2/Xbox etc.
the poster/Game cover for Golden Axe tho... erm... the wellness policy may have something to say about it....
^ i think even Triple H would be jealous as fuck over them ^
the later reincarnations of the golden axe games started to get a lil bit silly tho, they had a big blue tiger selectable as a character which scratched his opponents, which was annoying as hell.
^ made me laugh ^
has anyone here played the PS3 version of Golden Axe? i dont know anyone that owns a ps3 so i cant ask them or have a play on it so i need some reviews on it to see if its any good.

This was another popular arcade game of my childhood.
Unlike other classic arcade games this one actually made it on to the consoles and it was one of the first games I got when I owned a Mega Drive/Genesis console.

I still play it quite regularly to this day as I have it on the Mega Drive collection for my PSP.

The sequel games were nowhere near as good as the original as Phyl said.

I really think their is a lot of demand for hack and slash beat em up games like this to make a come back, they were great fun and nice and simple to play, no complicated puzzles or controls to figure out.

I do remember this game, but I didn't get the chance to play it very much. Pertaining to the PS3/Xbox release, I had the game for PS3, but I didn't quite find it as enjoyable. I think the controls were rather sluggish at times and the story just didn't really capture my interest. I am a huge fan of hack n' slash mainly towards the Dynasty/Samurai Warriors series, but I ended up taking this back after playing it a few times.

I remember this game! I loved it, I think I had it either on the Mega Drive or the computer, but whatever it was pretty good, the original that is, havent played any of the later versions though.
