JUST who are Pro Wrestling promotion Noah?

The Japanese company are set to put on their first ever show outside the Orient this June in Coventry, but us Brits know little about them.

So here, for all those planning to attend what should be an amazing night, is a guide to the delights of Noah.

The wrestling outfit has gained a reputation for putting on awesome shows with hard hitting matches and use a style called Puroresu which is treated more as a combat sport.

It uses moves which fans are use to seeing in Mixed Martial Arts and brings them in to a traditional pro wrestling match.

With Puroresu it’s more about combat than characters and storylines. To steal a promotional phrase, Noah is as real as it gets in Pro Wrestling.

Japanese wrestling is steeped in history and tradition but in comparison Noah is a new upstart.

In the 90s it was All Japan Pro Wrestling and New Japan Pro Wrestling which ruled the scene.

But an internal battle after the death of legendary AJPW promoter Giant Baba in 1999, led to top star Mitsuharu Misawa leaving a year later to start Pro Wrestling Noah.

His mission was to turn it in to a major force and he’s more than succeeded - as Noah now outdraw their rivals in many venues across Japan.

NEW%20TRADITION%20...%20streamers

NEW TRADITION ... streamers

And though they’re relatively young, Noah has upheld traditions like the fans throwing streamers at the wrestlers during their introduction and even started new ones with their famous and unique green matted ring.

The federation quickly gained worldwide notoriety thanks to wrestling critics raving about their shows, matches and wrestlers.

Their popularity then spread like wildfire as people across the globe started trading and buying videos and DVDs of their shows.

And if you haven’t seen them yet, here are the names to look out for when they grace our shores:

Kenta Kobashi – He is regarded as the strongest wrestler in Pruoresu today.

Kobashi was already a major star in the Japanese scene, and came to Noah to help establish them as a viable promotion.

He has since gone on to have many of the top bouts in the group’s history, capturing their heavyweight and tag championships.

Mitsuharu Misawa - Misawa is another Japanese wrestling legend who has fought for and won titles in both his former promotion AJPW and his current promotion Noah.

He was that highly acclaimed that he got to wrestle as the second generation Tiger Mask early on his career.

If you speak to any knowledgeable wrestling fan about will tell you how much of an honour it is to wrestle in Japan under the Tiger Mask name and character.

Kenta – This man is the young sensation of Noah dubbed as the most exciting wrestler in Japan today.

He has already fought all over the world and is a former junior heavyweight champion, which is what fans of WWE would call their cruiserweight division.

Kenta has already delivered many great performances and matches but many people are tipping him for even bigger things.

On top of these, Noah have recently announced that favourites Naomichi Marufuji, Taiji Ishimori, Kotaro Suzuki and Bison Smith will be joining the crew at the Coventry Skydome for a wild and exciting night of wrestling.

To find out more about the show and how to get tickets go to prowrestlingnoah.co.uk

a nice lil intro into the world of Noah here from The Sun newspaper in preperation for Noah's huge show in Coventry (at the Skydome) this coming june. ive got my ticket already and i cant wait for it, this is the show im looking forward to most this year and i shall be taking my camera for lots of pics and a show review will be done by me for this place to read.

thanks for putting this up Phyl, I never really knew much about NOAH and I want to learn more. Maybe I'll look out for the DVDs on Amazon.

This should've been titled "Getting to NOAH you" :D

Also, it claims that puroresu is a style, which it isn't. I'm pretty sure puroresu is just a translation of "professional wrestling", NOAH uses King's Road style, I think. And don't get me started on the use of capitals all the way through this...aside from that, it's nice that they cover wrestling outside of WWE and TNA.

I've been slowly getting more into NOAH stuff, I'm particularly enjoying what I've seen of Takeshi Morishima and Kenta Kobashi. I have to pretty much rely on YouTube and DailyMotion as I can't afford to be buying lots of DVDs, but there are some excellent matches around. I'll definitely be doing my best to check out the show in Coventry, depending on travel arrangements and stuff.

i know TNA says its the WWE alternative, but it really isnt. if you want pro wrestling at its finest, no short matches or bullshit angles, just pure wrestling, then Noah it is!

theres some great matches available on youtube, ones involving KENTA, Misawa or Kobashi - you cant go far wrong! some great 20/25/30 minute hard fought matches.

this is strong style at its best so definately check it out.

am in the process or ordering some Noah dvds so if anyone wants any then you know who to contact Tongue

who here is going to the Noah show in about 3 weeks time in coventry? its going to be an amazing show and yet there are people here who claim to be huge wrestling fans but are not taking this once in a lifetime oppertunity to go see the best wrestling promotion in the world play in their country instead of 1000s of miles away where they usually reside

Takeshi Morishima and Muhammad Yone vs Jun Akiyama and Bison Smith

The current GHC champion, Takeshi Morishima is ˜the man" in Pro Wrestling NOAH at the moment. Having conquered Ring of Honor and won their world title, he recently up-ended the legendary Mitsuharu Misawa to take Pro Wrestling NOAH's most prized possession.

At European Navigation 2008, Morishima will be in tag team action alongside his former GHC Tag championship partner, the afro-sporting Mohammed Yone. Yone and Morishima have toured Europe as a tandem before, and have become firm favorites with UK fans.

On June 21st, their opponents will be Jun Akiyama and Bison Smith. Akiyama is a 16 year pro, who has been GHC Heavyweight champion himself. A top contender for Morishima's belt, Akiyama will be looking to score a pinfall victory over the current champion in this contest to try and earn himself a future title shot.

Joining Jun Akiyama is one of Pro Wrestling NOAH's top foreign ˜gaijin" competitors. Bison Smith. The stocky US competitor has held numerous titles in his home country, and has already had opportunities at the GHC title. Like Akiyama, Bison Smith will be looking to prove himself worthy of a title shot against Morishima.

With the target firmly on Morishima in this match, a lot is at stake for the champion, and he will be coming into this match with victory in mind in order to further prove his worth as champion.

Tsuyochi Kikuchi and Jun Izmuda vs Wade Fitzgerald and Martin Stone

One of the most interesting matches of the NOAH European Navigation show will pit the seemingly unlikely tandem of Martin Stone and Wade Fitzgerald against veteran NOAH competitors Jun Izmuda and Tsuyoshi Kikuchi.

For Stone and Fitzgerald this will not only be their first Pro Wrestling NOAH outing, but their first as a team. Both men have faced NOAH competition in the past on UK shores. Fitzgerald's championship winning martial arts background and Stone's brute strength and power should provide a perfect combination to counter the vast experience provided by Kikuchi and Izmuda. Current IPW:UK champion Stone and 4FW Tag Team Champion Fitzgerald are both in intense training for what is their biggest outing to date.

Tsuyochi Kikuchi is a 20 year veteran who has held tag titles in All Japan Pro Wrestling and New Japan Pro Wrestling, as well as regularly competing in major tag team matches in Pro Wrestling NOAH. His fireball bomb and Zero-sen kick are both devastating weapons in an arsenal that made him one of the most prominent junior stars of the 1990s.

Former sumo star Jun Izmuda is a 16 year veteran, and has also held tag team gold (in All Japan Pro Wrestling and the IWA). His pure power and devastating Meteorite diving headbutt have made him formidable opposition throughout his NOAH tenure.

With the skills and experience that Kikuchi and Izmuda possess, it would look a foregone conclusion that they would be able to defeat the less experienced UK team. But with a perfect combination of skills and styles the UK team could spring what many would consider an upset unseat the well traveled veterans.

The Sun Online Exclusive Match Announcement - Joel Redman vs Atsushi Aoki

As part of the Sun Online's awesome coverage of European Navigation, Adam Sibley has exclusively revealed another match for Pro Wrestling Noah's debut on June 21st. A match that has even the Noah UK Officials excited and will be the third to last match announced. for a match preview please visit the sun online

Mark Briscoe Injury
Unfortunately Mark Briscoe has had to withdraw from active competition at European Navigation due to a severe injury that required surgery last week. The unfortunate situation had hoped to be avoided but an MRI confirmed that it is in the best interest of Briscoe's career to have immediate surgery and rehab time is estimated at 3-6. Knowing the Briscoes, the extent of the injury must have been extreme for either one of them to take 3 months out of the ring. Noah officials had already 3 talents on standby should any injuries occur from now until June 21st and the replacing superstar and his match will be announced shortly. Noah UK Offices commented "We are extremely disappointed that Mark Briscoe will not be able to compete on June 21st although he will still be in attendance as he was advertised and will still be apart of the meet and greet at European Navigation. We also have organized a top level replacement for the card which should be announced shortly"
