Quote  Dave Meltzer reports that Kassius Ohno (aka Chris Hero) was part of this week’s WWE layoffs.

As of this writing, it’s unknown whether he was laid off or furloughed. He changed his Twitter name to ‘WWE Alumni’. He has yet to confirm the news publicly as of this writing.

Not much of a shock, Ohno had been used in a player coach role in NXT UK in recent times, it had always been clear there weren't big plans for him in WWE and I don't think he would ever be used on Raw or Smackdown.

He has a good record on the indies, he could be a decent pick up for AEW as a solid hand to work with their younger inexperienced talent otherwise I can see him heading to ROH or Impact.

So far all the WWE releases have been sound business decisions. Most of the talent let go were low card used as enhancement talent who can easily be replaced with lesser known NXT and performance centre talent who are far cheaper to use for preliminary style matches.

The bigger names let go like Rusev, Gallows, Anderson and ECIII have all had backstage issues or requested their releases in the past. I saw some people today complaining about the release of Mike Bennett due to his wife having a baby, this is a guy who had a lot of time off for drug issues and then asked for his release just shortly after signing a long-term deal. If anything he should have been the first name cut.

ECIII and Gallows and Anderson are said to be appearing at Slammiversary for Impact Wrestling, not sure if this is a long-term arrangement or a one shot deal. I did see a report that Gallows/Anderson are negotiating a deal that would allow them to work for Impact and NJPW.
There has also been teases from Rusev about appearing for Impact.

I would be disappointed if AEW missed out on all these guys, I understand them not having huge interest in Gallows and Anderson as they were mostly portrayed as jobbers in WWE and it will take them a while to shake off that stigma, but ECIII and Rusev are talent that should definitely be on AEW's radar. They seem to be missing the boat too often with some of the free agent talent out there.

They cant sign everyone WWE releases though because they are already getting criticism for being a WWE lite as it is with Jericho (some backlash when he was first champ), Morley, Hager etc

I do think though they should have signed Rusev - he was so badly used in WWE yet was so over, good in the ring, can cut a good promo - he literally has it all

Amazing they wouldn't want to sign Gallows and Anderson if only due to the fact that they were og Bullet Club.

Quote  Dave Meltzer reported in the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that WWE Chairman and CEO Vince McMahon is apparently saying that WWE needs to create new stars.

It was noted that his belief in needing new stars is due to the fact that WrestleMania is over and several wrestlers are missing due to the pandemic and other reasons.

It’ll be interesting to see whether his belief actually comes through instead of pushing veteran stars

Hopefully this is Vince finally waking up and realising that WWE need to find their next crop of top stars that are marketable and actually draw. Bringing back veterans like Goldberg and The Undertaker is only ever a very short term fix.

They have something in Drew McIntyre, he looks and carries himself like a big star, he's passionate about the business and is completely invested in his character, plus he has the talent both on the mic and in the ring to back all this up, I really think Drew should be crowned as the face of the company moving forward. His work has been top notch but sadly he has not been able to do it in front of fans since his monster push got going, and his big Wrestlemania moment in particular took place in a empty arena.

Then you have Keith Lee. This guy has star written all over him he has all the tools the look, the size the ring skills the charisma and he's a good talker. He's still in NXT of course but the fact he won both major singles titles and has just vacated the North American strap shows that they see him as the star of that brand and I seen him moving to Raw or Smackdown later this year.

Karrion Kross is another who could be big, it's early days but his presentation and the work that has gone into the production of his character as well as the big wins he's had so far all suggest WWE have big plans for him.

Matt Riddle is off to a good start on Smackdown, he has a very likeable persona and his down to earth laid back and unique style makes him very marketable. My gut feeling is he'll find his comfort zone in the high mid-card but I wouldn't rule out him making it to the main event.

Bray Wyatt I think is settling into a attraction role, similar to that of The Undertaker he will always be presented as a top star and competes in top matches and feuds not necessarily involving titles because he doesn't need a belt. His booking has been smart in that we only see The Fiend now and again which keeps his value high and they seem open to having him switch between Firefly Fun House Bray, original Bray and The Fiend which gives lots of different options for his storylines. Will be interesting to see if he turns babyface in time because they must see a merchandise goldmine in his character.

Braun Strowman is also more of a attraction. I think he needs to drop the belt and go back to that Big Show type role where he is used in a featured position on the card but as more of a special attraction rather than someone chasing titles. Promos are not his strong suit so another option is maybe a heel turn with a manager?

Lastly I'm not sure what the future is for Roman Reigns. He's always been a reliable top guy and he looks the part but he has always suffered from the Cena fan reaction and he hasn't embraced it the way JC did. Roman doesn't always appear to have passion for what hes doing in the same way Cena did or now Drew does, he does a good job but you dont feel that he loves what hes doing and I wonder if he already has a eye on Hollywood. RR will always be presented as a top guy for sure but I'm not certain if when he returns he will still be the guy. This would be a perfect time to have him turn heel and use his star power to help build somebody new.

They'll none of them really draw until they get the freedom to sink or swim on their own merits and be themselves uncensored. These days cancel culture has such a strangle hold on entertainment media that everyone has to walk on eggshells, and that's precisely what a pro-wrestler cannot afford to do. As soon as you do that you neuter them and what fun is seeing a guy with his balls chopped off pretend to be a badass?

The only solution is to get away from the attitude era way of thinking and do what Jim Ross was suggesting for so many years. Make the rules matter, make wins and losses matter. Return to the sports heavy side of the entertainment and leave the entertainment to rare and very conservative usage. Leave it to matches like the AJ Styles and Undertaker boneyard match at WrestleMania. Monday night raw, NXT and Friday Night Smackdown should be less about swerves and outrageous behavior and more about wrestling by the books. Make an announcement that the referees will be cracking down on rule breaking and counting and that the fun is over, then give people matches like you'd see from Bret Hart, Kurt Angle, Daniel Bryan, or Lou Thesz, and then create more believable heels like Jake Roberts and Roddy Piper who could cheat but make the subtlety of it all outrageous.

Btw, a lot of these things are things AEW is doing and it's why you see such a disparity between those fans that watch AEW and those who watch Raw and SmackDown.

EDIT: One thing I forgot to mention, with both Kofi and Xavier out for months, WWE needs to push the fuck out of Big E.

Big E. Ought to be the guy to take the title off either Braun Strowman or Drew McIntyre. Best of all, he doesn't even need to turn heel. Everything WWE had with Kofi, they have with Big E, except Big E. Has charisma for days.
