Yeah I watch it, great show although I'd be lying if I said I don't struggle to follow it at times, there are so many different stories going on that all link up one way or another, it's a very complex and detailed plot and it's a very slow burning story which requires great attention to detail.

I watched season 1 then took a long break before binge watching all the way to the current series. Looking forward to the first episode tomorrow. I think they are airing a hour and a half story so far recap episode which I may try and catch.

That is sort of what I did as well. I watched until somewhere in the middle of season 3, then took a break until this last week when I got myself caught up.

I read the books first up until Dance of Dragons. IIRC that ended with the death of Jon Snow and Arya being stabbed and falling into a river. So I said fuck it.

Now that I have finished season 6 and it is actually further now in the story than where the last book left off, thus, I now know Arya not only survived but killed Waldo Frey and his entire house and fed it to him first, and that Jon Snow was brought back to life, reunited with his sister and that Sansa is FINALLY not the childish scared little girl she's been throughout the story, I am finally enjoying it.

I kept forcing myself to read on, knowing everyone and their mother would tell you the story was so great, but it never got great imo. Until now.

Daenarys is awesome, Jon is good, Arya is awesome, Sansa is no longer a drain, and all the Lannister children are dead. That leaves basically only the Lannister twins, Petyr Baelish, and of course the threat of the white walkers.

This next season should be good. Can't wait to see Winter and Daenarys invasion.

It DOES get better. Losing Ned Stark sucked, but the series really wasn't about him.

The main characters seem to be Daenarys Targaryen, Jon Snow, Arya Stark, Sansa Stark, the Lannister Twins, as well as Tyrion Lannister, and then to a lesser extent Theon Greyjoy, Davos Seaworth, Breanne of Tarth, and Petyr Baelish.

My personal theory is that as the books are named "A Song of Ice and Fire" (Game of Thrones is just the name of book 1) that the series will end with Daenarys Targaryen (Fire) and Jon Snow (Ice) ruling the world, but I really don't know.

The series starts out in a downward spiral IMO (it's probably not the most popular opinion, fyi) and then gets better and better as it goes. I did not like season 1, but season 2 was a little better, season 3 slightly better still, season 4 got to be pretty good, season 5 was good, and season 6 was great. But that's my opinion, some people loved season 1 and seem to think it's been amazing from the very start so... /shrug

But if you're like me and you didn't like season 1 that much, then if you feel up for binge-watching and powering through season 2, which really isn't that bad, then you should be able to enjoy it more and more as you go.

~~~~~~~~~~~~
BTW as a cultural aside, I'm curious. I noticed you guys call what we in the states call seasons, series. It's easy enough for me to wrap my head around and auto-translate in my head what you mean, but it leaves me wondering. What do you call it when a show, such as The Office has two different runs with different cast members? To us that's a different series, I would assume that since you call what we call seasons, series, that you would call what we call series, something else. What would that be?
In that case it would still be a series. Copycat shows like the Office as far as I'm aware don't have a different term for them over here.
We use the term season as well, for me a longer running show such as Chicago PD or Two and a Half Men would be a season while a shorter lived show like Line of Duty would be a series but that's just my thinking.
With the new season underway it finally seems like the story is coming to a head. Dance of Dragons left off in such a bad way I had no interest in reading any further, and had all but washed my hands, but the TV show is a lot more easily palatable than the books. With the show being further ahead in the story than the books, resolutions to cliffhangers, like Jon Snow's death, and Arya also looking to be dead after being blinded, stabbed and falling off a bridge into a river, as well as new much more enjoyable outcomes like Arya's revenge on house Frey for the Red Wedding, things are shaping up to be not quite such a mess.
When things started out and the Starks went to King's Landing, and then Eddard died and the everyone went their separate ways things were such a mess. But now with Stannis being dead and Davos being with Jon Snow, Sansa being back in Winterfell, as well as Bran AND Arya, with Tyrion leaving behind his family to join with Dany, things have become much more black and white.
In fact, you can kind of see how certain people are growing in to filling old roles in the old kingdom that will possibly be there at the end. Sansa is turning into quite a master of whispers. Sam is turning into a maester. Bran is the 3-eyed raven. Arya is an assassin. People have their roles well defined now, and it's just a matter of fleshing them all out. Is Jon to be King? Or Dany queen? Or do they inbreed even more and become King and Queen together? Or does Dany go mad like the rest of her family? Will Sansa turn traitor after being corrupted by the bad influence of Littlefinger whispering in her ear and get replaced by Bran?
Regardless of the answers to these questions it seems Cersei will be dealt with as the ultimate antagonist and the Night King and his white walkers are going to be dealt with more as a force of nature. To begin with it wasn't even clear that Cersei was the ultimate antagonist or if she was just a bit player. For a time it seemed like maybe it would be the Red Witch, or Joffrey. There's still an outside chance of it being Dany, but only if she cracks otherwise she's not just a hero she could very well be THE hero.
It seems quite clear now though that the story is going to end with the war against the white walkers, likely to put them down for good, though whether or not the war for the 7 kingdoms finishes before or during is still unclear.
The cliché thing to do would to be to have Cersei ignore the problem of the white walkers until the very end, and consider only her own claim to the Iron Throne. In fact she's already on that path. That in turn would cause problems for Jon Snow and the war against the Night King, and they'll try and ignore her until she ruins their chances of winning early. Then they will put her down just in the nick of time so they can stop the white walkers from overrunning the world.
GRR Martin does his very best to break the clichés. So that begs the question, what really will happen?
I could see GRR having Jon and Dany beat the white walkers but the forces are so depleted that the get decimated by Cersei. The ending nobody would expect. Fair enough people would be pissed off but I am interested to see what happens when Jon and Dany find out Dany is Jon's Aunt. Also I hve a thought that maybe Tyrion is a Targaryen Bastard.
Y'know what?....It's really fucking hot here in Africa. Who knew?....Well me, I have been doing this for almost 5 years
Have you see this before? Interesting theory.
Most expect Dany to end up on the throne but that seems predictable which isn't the way Game of Thrones is written, part of the appeal is that you never know what's coming. Tyrion is still a good outside bet.
I think this week's episode could well be the best so far, the battle scenes with the Dragon were superb and completely gripping.
