Quote PM backs Wimbledon equal pay cause

Press Association
Wednesday June 28, 2006 5:28 PM

Prime Minister Tony Blair has joined the call for women tennis players to receive the same prize money as male competitors at Wimbledon.

Mr Blair said he supported Culture, Media and Sport Secretary Tessa Jowell who has written an open letter to the All England Lawn Tennis Club asking for sex equality.

The championship is the only major international tennis tournament not to offer equal pay to male and female winners, with the women's winner scooping 625,000 compared to 655,000 for the men's.

Defending champion Venus Williams said it was exciting Mr Blair had backed the cause.

In an interview following her 6-1 6-0 win over Bethanie Mattek, she said: "The fact that Mr Blair finds this cause extremely important really gives credence to, you know, the free world that this is something that really makes sense and something that needs to be done."

She was also thankful former champion John McEnroe had lent his weight to the argument.

"I think if he were ever to see his four daughters do anything, in tennis or secularly in the workplace, anywhere in the world, he'd want them to be treated just as well as his sons," she said.

The fact that her game on Wednesday lasted only 51 minutes had nothing to do with it, she added.

"I would say my defence, and the rest of the women on the tour also, is that we aren't involved in arguing the points of time spent on court, sets played - that's a moot topic. What it's really about is being treated equal as a human being. That's really our platform, and it's the truth."

Former champion Maria Sharapova, who demolished Anna Smashnova 6-2 6-0 on Wednesday afternoon in her first-round match, said: "I think men and women should be treated equally. You know this is an amazing sport that we play in. There's so much interest in women's tennis today. I think the public, as well, they enjoy the women's play just as much as the men. Just because the men play five sets, they're physically stronger, they've got stronger genes, I mean, what can we do?"

Blair needs to butt out. I have read that Venus doesn't mind playing five sets for equal pay. Good for her seeing the wider picture. The female locker room (like Sharapova) go on about being treated equaly. Well how about if they want the same amount of money (which i have no problem with) they play 5 sets like the men and not 3 ? Sounds like a great way to finish the debate. I don't believe at the moment women should get equal pay. The top seeds in the early matches barely drop a game. At least the men do. At the moment it's the men being discriminated against working for alot less per minute/set etc then the ladies.

I think the pay should reflect the following. For instance, NBA players get better pay then WNBA because the NBA has a bigger following. Of course if there are women who can hang with men on the tennis court, I'd say let them compete with the men. I'm not ashamed to admit there are a few women that are better wrestlers then me a great many who are better at Taekwondo.

Equal pay should be approved when woman play best out of 5 sets like men. I ain't being sexist because i myself am female. I really enjoy watchin the guys play best out of fine. Their matches seem more intense and exciting to watch.

it seems ridiculous the men spend hours on court and i think during Wimbledon Mauresmo barely stayed on court for longer than 30mins. How can they expect to be paid the same for difference in "work"

Well now we have it announced women will get the same as men this year. I think that is pure wrong and a bad decision. They have simply gave in to pear pressure about sexual equality. Mens games bring in higher ratings on tv, more money in advertising, have to play five sets etc. So just on what grounds do women have to ask for the same cash wise ? I would have been all for it if they were willing to play five sets. In this day and age they should play the same amount of sets as the men do.

How very silly, the prize money is almost identical anyway! It seems to me, some people will simply make a fuss simply because they can.

They play less sets than the men and the pay reflects this.

It is stupid with what has gone on about men and women getting equal prize money. If they both played best of 3 or best of 5 matches then fair enough you would expect them to be paid the same. There  is only something like 25,000 between the two payments so why all the fuss, the men should be paid more as they play a longer match in terms of sets compared to that of the women.
People who think they know everything are annoying to those of us who do

I totally agree that is fair!!! I am man but you know u cant compared the physical condition of a man with a woman!!! they push themself to the limits in this case (women 3 sets and men 5) i think is fair and square lol!

If they want to play 5 sets then they're quite entitled to equal pay.  As it is its now the men who aren't being treated fairly cos they get the same money for more work.  If you compare it to the workplace its like someone who works a 10 hour day gets the same pay as someone who works 6.

I believe that women should get equal pay as men do, because women work there arses off just as much as the men do. Sure there matches dont go longer but fact is, its a hard battle on the court in the different types o weather. Like really, this isnt the old days when women were looked under men and now its time for a change, women should get the same amount as men.

The thing is women were being paid way more per set. The difference in pay was only about 60 thousand pounds anyway. And considering men could play 21 more sets I would say the women are far from hard done by. Now the problem is the men might just get together and ask for more money because they are being underpaid for way more work than the women do. Why have women got higher pay anyway? They don't bring in the ratings or play the five sets. This is just a PR stunt to quieten the sexist people.
