Ezekiel Jackson is not only the final ECW champion, but is technically the shortest reigning ECW champion ever. At Guilty as Charged 2001, The Sandman won the Title, and held it for 6 minutes, 32 seconds, before losing it to Rhino. From the three count to the credits rolling and fading to black, Jackson's reign was 2 minutes, 59 seconds.

The reason Ezekiel Jackson won the title is because Vince McMahon wanted Jackson to have momentum as he will be heading to the SmackDown! brand. There was a thought of Christian retaining, to give the crowd a happy ending, but that was shot down.

Some wanted to honor the old ECW on the show, including some old names coming back for cameo appearances, but the thought was that it was more important to get WWE NXT over, while closing out ECW as quickly as possible.

No real surprise that ECW just kind of faded out with no real send-off.

The idea of cameo appearances from former talent made me laugh, if they were talking about former originals I cant see many of them wanting to be a part of it, although some may have done it purely for the pay-off it has to be said.

I would have preferred to have seen Christian go out as champ but I can see the logic in Big Zeke being the final champion as it gives him a edge before he heads to Smackdown and likely gets a decent push.
Zeke has improved greatly since his debut and I can see him making a decent powerhouse babyface, perhaps WWE can even succeed with him where they failed with Bobby Lashley.

Quote Joey Styles has posted a new WWE Universe Blog on the end of ECW, here are the highlights…

On ECW Returning: "I feel both ECW and my announcing career should have been retired after the ECW One Night Stand pay-per-view in 2005. WWE was classy enough to give everyone who was ever involved with the Original ECW, all of us who worked for the promotion and the rabid fans who made ECW, the closure we all emotionally craved. When I heard the success of the ECW One Night Stand 2005 was going to be the catalyst for the re-birth of a WWE owned ECW (or WWECW as we ECW Originals and Original ECW fans called it), I felt strongly that it wasn't going to resonate with WWE or ECW fans. The Original ECW was a gritty and underground pro wrestling alternative to WWE's perfectly produced global entertainment product."

On The WWE's ECW Failing: "As I feared would happen, ECW becoming WWE's third brand didn't resonate with either Original ECW fans or WWE fans. The resulting hybrid was a huge fiscal success but struggled creatively for years. Thanks to the third (and current) ECW writing team of Ed Koskey and Jen Bloodsworth, ECW finally discovered and solidified its identity as the launching pad to Raw and SmackDown for young talent like CM Punk, Sheamus, Evan Bourne, Kofi Kingston, Jack Swagger and many others. Still, the star-making show being named ECW was still more a hindrance than a help because it always drew comparisons to the Fight Club-like, Original ECW."

On The Best Part Of The WWE's ECW: "In my opinion, the greatest thing that came from WWE's ECW was ECW Originals Tommy Dreamer, The Sandman and Sabu finally wrestling for a global TV audience and earning the career validation they deserved when they joined Rob Van Dam at WrestleMania 23 at Ford Field in Detroit. The three greatest moments of my announcing career were the Original ECW's Barely Legal pay-per-view, WWE's ECW One Night Stand 2005 pay-per-view and Taz and I calling The ECW Originals defeating the New Breed at WrestleMania 23 in front of 80,000 fans chanting "ECW!" The credit for that match belongs to both Paul Heyman and Vince McMahon."

A Thank You To Paul Heyman And WWE: I'll always be thankful to Paul Heyman for creating the Original ECW and giving me the opportunity to begin a career in pro wrestling that lasts to this day and may last for years to come. I'll always be thankful to WWE for resurrecting the Original ECW perfectly at ECW One Night Stand 2005 and inviting me to call the show.

That's how to look at a situation as it is instead of being all pro or all negative.

Vince gave guys who probably didn't deserve a chance (Sabu, Sandman etc) a chance to be seen by many more fans and earn more money than they ever had.

ECW definately served a purpose with it being there to elevate guys like Punk and Sheamus to the main events.

Completely agree with everything Joey said.....

The first ECW One Night Stand was a massive success and a excellent PPV, it was ECW through and through with Paul Heyman given complete creative freedom to produce a show that was a pure ECW style product featuring talent that had all been a major part of ECW over the years. These reunion shows could have continued as a yearly one off event but unfortunately the number of ECW originals signing for TNA or retiring from active in-ring competition soon after the first show really put paid to that, hence why the second One Night Stand featured so much WWE talent and while still following a ECW format of sorts, it was clear the PPV was all about the WWE stars - WWE would likely not want to run a show like that every year due to how badly the top WWE names who had no ties to ECW were crucified by the ECW crowd, John Cena in fairness handled the fan-reaction beautifully but other WWE talent would not have been so professional.

The WWECW brand served a purpose in acting as a platform for new WWE talent but as Joey said the ECW name became a hindrance with people constantly drawing comparison between the brand and the original ECW, I'm sure if WWE had run the brand under a different name with no ties to ECW people would have been more accepting and appreciated it for what it was - a high-grade developmental ground for new WWE talent.

So while the first ONS was a massive success their is no way WWE could have run that kind of product week in week out as the talent would have ended up crippled doing that on WWE schedule and alot of the talent working the show were semi-retired anyway and would have no interest in a WWE schedule, a one-off tribute show really was the only option.

WWECW should be remembered for catapulting the likes of Sheamus and CM Punk in to the big-time and for giving guys like Sabu and the Sandman a limited amount of mainstream exposure and the chance to perform at Wrestlemania as well as significantly padding out their retirement funds.

Quote Many are wondering what happens to the ECW roster after the brand is put to rest tonight. According to sources within WWE, Christian and the team of Caylen Croft & Trent Baretta are expected to end up on SmackDown!, while William Regal & Ezekiel Jackson, Zack Ryder & Rosa Mendez will be moved to RAW. It's still anyone's guess what the future will hold for people like Shelton Benjamin, Goldust, Yoshi Tatsu, Vance Archer, Tiffany and Savananah, but they are all expected to remain on the main roster.

* I'd have Tiffany as the valet of her real life fiance Drew Mcintyre in some sort of power couple.

* Croft and Baretta won't last too long on Raw before they are forgotten about.

* With those nobody knows about yet I can only see Savannah having to worry about her job.

As soon as the promo for NXT showed Christian on the show I knew he was dropping the title.  Then he was given a chance to thank the peeps and all.  It felt like a farewell address.  Given that Zeke has been losing to Christian repeatedly, I don't see how getting the win really counts as 'momentum.'

So WWECW goes out with a whimper and not a bang.  The whole show felt more like an extended commerical for NXT.

I have to completely agree.  In the end it was the name that held the entire brand and show back.  Had the brand operated under another name it would have been able to forge its own identity.  But it also allowed Vince to bury ECW... you don't hear the ECW chants creeping in anymore.

Has any of this been thought out ahead of time? I understand that Vince wanted to get rid of the program and get on to NXT... but seriously, they could have done something during the show like a supplemental draft just to clear up where the various talent was going (before some of the guys go back to FCW or get released.)  I guess we might see more than one Superstars 'exclusive' matchesWink

Anyone else notice that the rumors don't even mention Vladimir Kozlov or Hurricane Helms anymore?

Spoiler alert!
I thought the matchup between Christian and Big zeke was good, but it was dissapointing to me to see that they felt christian couldnt overcome the double team tactics, i thought him pulling out a grand victory was in order, but instead zeke won in a quick flop that wasnt that impressing. Overall the last ECW was not impressing. And it seems the rumors were confirmed about NXT being a Tough Enough v2 of sorts, im just glad their using REAL new talent, and not just nobodys who sent in tapes.

They need to bring back the ECW title at Wrestlmania and have Zeke defend against dreamer or Christian cause zeke as the last champ is weak

How dose everyone feel about ECW? Anyone hyped for nxt, im intrigued at the most. Brian Dainleson in my pick early on.

WWF was great. WCW is better. TNA is the best. And AJ Styles has competed in all three!!!

Well, considering how far John Morrison, the Miz, and Melina have come from "nobodys who sent in tapes", I wouldn't say that system was a total flop. However, I do agree that the NXT prodigies are definitely on a closer track to start than the kind of contestants that would file in for Tough Enough. Disappointed slightly that Kaval and Hawkins aren't on this show so far, but I'm pretty confident the "NXT" round of NXT production will feature at least one of those two.

as for the what your saying. how about i dont care for WWE's ECW it's finally dead to be replaced by a show that could reveal some secrets about the buisness.

bring the ECW title back is a dumb idea, like hornswoggle in DX or DX in genreal (2009 - 2010)

Tommy Dreamer the other week wrote this on his WWE Universe blog page and i've only just seen it.......

Quote

Well with ECW having 3 weeks left. I have decided so do I. I had an amazing farewell to ECW on TV. So I will do two more blogs on WWE Universe and fade away like ECW and wait to see what is NXT.

Some people are happy, some people are sad about ECW going off the air. The Original die hard ECW fans knew it wasn't the same. That Original ECW was a magical time in wrestling and can never be duplicated. If you go back in the archives of my blogs, you can read many opinions of those days. I think the new ECW had some great expectations, but had some extreme shoes to fill in. Let us not pass negative judgement on the show. As a fan I have enjoyed many moments of ECW TV( except for anything involving Abraham Washington or Koslov no offense)

Let us not forget the WWE Superstars that were part of ECW and elevated their game to go to RAW or Smackdown. CM Punk,Sheamus,Kofi Kingston, Jack Swagger,Kelly Kelly(even though she went on dates with Balls Mahoney)  and The Hart Dynasty were unknowns till making it in ECW and now look at them.

The New ECW helped revive careers and gave many WWE Supertars a second chance to show the world their talents. Christian,John Morrison,Mark Henry,Shelton Benjamin,Goldust,William Regal,Kane,Matt Striker,Todd Grisham,Big Show,Matt Hardy,Chavo Guerrero and it pains me to say even the Miz

Think of how much better Raw or Smackdown will become with the additions of Ezekial Jackson,Yoshi Tatsu,Croft and Barreta,Vance Archer and even the WOO WOO WOO Guy.

So all should not be so negative and as I always say appreciate what you have because one day it may be gone.

In closing I will leave you each week with my three personal favorite moments in the new ECW

#3 2008 Royal Rumble

The Rumble is my favorite PPV concept. Having been to many WWE events at Madison Square Garden. It was a dream come true. I can not tell you the emotion and pure rush the crowd gave me when my music was hit. They roof blew in the Garden. I was in the ring with legends The Undertaker and Shawn Michaels. I had seperate chants of ECW,Tommy and lets go Dreamer for the entire time I was in there. The crowd let out a huge boo when Batista eliminated me and were vocally disappointed. I on the other hand did not mind not going to the main event of Wrestlemania. I had just recieved the greatest two minutes of my life. Thanks ECW.

Thanks for reading

Be good to each other

Tommy Dreamer

ECW revived the career of Christian and gave him a second chance? Don't be so stupid.

Christian could have stayed in TNA if he wanted. It's not like the new ECW was a last resort for him.

I agree with much of the rest he says though.

They had goldust in the final ecw and he wasnt in the main event tearing shit up like he did with undertaker at in your house. They had ryder and shelton sit out, along with kozlov, little spot, nothing impressive. the show was bad, and the ending was worse, people like to see screw jobs, but we also like to see the good guy win once in a while. I think its obvious yoshi tatsu should head to raw to either team with bourne or rival him. Goldust with probably retire or go to smackdown, id like to see him buy his name or come up with a better name and go to tna.benjiman should go for the united states or the IC. Christian should jump to Raw and join the Title Hunt. alot of these Wrestlers will be mentors in NXT this will be interesting how it plays out.. ne1 here think brian dainelson and two others are gonna be the big ones to come out of this?
WWF was great. WCW is better. TNA is the best. And AJ Styles has competed in all three!!!
