Quote Chad Gable vs. Shelton Benjamin: This one is a King Of The Ring tournament match. Shelton starts off strong with some suplexes on Gable. Gable fights back with a double leg takedown and a series of shots to the face. Shelton comes back with a hard Irish whip into the corner. Andrade and Zelina Vega are shown backstage watching on a monitor, as the winner of this match faces Andrade next week. Shelton talks trash to Gable until Gable nails him with some right hands. They trade strikes until Gable stuns Shelton with a kick and then a swinging neckbreaker. Gable follows up with a German suplex, but Shelton fights back with a clothesline, and both men are down. Shelton puts Gable in the ankle lock, but Gable escapes and dumps Shelton out to ringside. Gable looks for a dive on Shelton at ringside, but Shelton catches him and slams him into the fan barricade. Back in the ring, they fight in the corner, and Gable headbutts Shelton down. Gable misses a shot off the top rope, and Shelton fires back with a knee to the face. Shelton looks for a powerbomb, but Gable reverses it into a pin for the three count.

Winner: Chad Gable

 - Gable advances in the King Of The Ring tournament and will face Andrade next week.

When he got interviewed backstage I didn't even recognise him as it's the first time I have seen him with his much better shorter hair.

I never thought of him as short when he had longer hair, but I noticed it even without Shelton bringing it up.

We shall see how well liked he is backstage. Maybe he will win again next week?

This KOTR match was the most predictable of the first round by a long shot.

For weeks Gable has been mocked by Benjamin and the height jokes have been coming out, there was only ever going to be one winner in the match.

Gable is getting over with this pity party / pick on him for his size storyline theyve got going on.

Other than that hes got generic music a generic personality and should not be beating guys like Andrade in the final stages of a tournament such as this.

Generic Gable won his match, albeit against Shane who interjected himself into the match in place of Elias.

Gable is good in the ring but everything else about him is bland, maybe they can use this tournament to really push him on?

I cant see him beating Corbin in the final

The booking of Gable is dumb, he constantly gets insulted about his height and gets treated like a joke and all he does is pout and look like hes about to burst into tears, who is going to cheer a guy who acts like that?

He's great in the ring though, perhaps they are trying to make him a sympathetic babyface but its not working, he needs to at least stand up to the people making fun of him and not just stand there looking heartbroken otherwise he will never be taken seriously.

The only thing i can think they will do with Gable is have him be insulted a few more weeks before finally snapping at someone and standing up to them.

Then i guess theyll transition him to a Johnny Gargano style role, however im not sure hed get the same reaction because i cant see WWE booking him in 25+ minute matches with crazy near fallas and having him lose alot whilst still maintaining his popularity.

The underdog thing works for some, like Bryan and Gargano who are excellent storytellers - Gable doesnt come across as one to me - i may be wrong on that though.

Yeah I guess that could work by having Gable snap after taking weeks of abuse, but I agree with you he doesn't have that same storytelling ability that Gargano and Bryan have and whatever he does he will not be over at the same level as guys like them.

I personally think if Jason Jordan is ever fit to wrestle again the best move for Gable would be to reunite American Alpha.

This. That team split waaay too early; I have always thought.

As for this "Shorty G" thing; I mean I get why it's being done. They want a way to make him entertaining. But it reminds me of Charlie Haas several years ago when he adapted all these gimmicks instead of him just being him. Some liked it; some didn't. But the whole time I was thinking, why can't he just be a wrestler?

Gable is a good mat technician suited to be simply a serious wrestler. The matches with Baron Corbin were good. Gable would be fine in those type of competitive matches. But as said he is probably better in a tag team than in singles.

If he can't find a partner, I actually think the best move for him would be a return to NXT, as just himself.

The Charlie Haas comparison is a good one, both he and Gable are very alike in that they are very good technical wrestlers but beyond that there isnt much more in terms of character depth.
So yeah I also understand why they've done the Shorty G thing, it's a way to try and make Gable more entertaining and more marketable because without that all you have is bland Chad Gable, yeah hes a good wrestler and a former Olympian but that's it. Should probably mention that Kurt Angle didn't work at all when booked as a serious Olympic athlete, the fans shit all over it, he got over by adding the comedic heelish traits to his character and that combined with his in ring talent got him over huge.

I dont like the Shorty G gimmick but it will appeal to kids perhaps and presents more merchandise opportunities. Without it Gable would probably be just another low card jobber.
