The Shining is also great. Better than the movie, but that's closer. The movie was superb.

Never read Shannara, doubt I'll make the effort to pick it up.

You don't like A Song of Fire and Ice? GTFO, you're dead to me. In the real world bad things happen to good people, the books, like life are not a fairytale.

Dark Tower is epic, I like how the links to other books are usually just as an aside rather than a major point in the plot, just a link rather an intertwining story.

The Shining is fantastic, better than the movie by far.

GRR Martin writes exceedingly well, about the slimiest sleaziest people you can come across. Kills the decent characters, so far the only ones not dead that I care a damn about are Tyrion & Aria. The rest, especially Cersei can rot. I liked Robert Baratheon too, but I knew he wasn't going to live, Ned Stark was a surprise, but looking back I don't know why. If the guy can't write a character I like, (which he has shown he CAN, he just likes to kill them) then it's hardly worth my reading. In REAL life not EVERY person is a slimeball, and not EVERY person worth a damn dies from their own stupidity. I don't mind a point and counterpoint POV, but as soon as I start to like someone they get killed because good is dumb in his books, and THAT is not realistic either.

Take Stephen King for example. Everyone but Roland & Susannah dies, yet he clears the airs, Roland is forced to both suffer and he is given a chance at redemption. Susannah is smart enough to clear out before the shit really hits the fan and it's too late, and she finds another world's version of Eddie & Jake. He killed just about everyone, but he still held on to the one character everyone loved because otherwise he would have ruined everything, not only for the story, but for the readers. He even got blasted by readers for killing Jake three times. I mean seriously who kills the awesome kid? But again he gave the readers what they were after.

With GRR Martin, he doesn't clue you in to who is who, and that's fine, but he also buries the protagonist to the point where I'm not even sure there IS one, unless it's Aria. The problem I have is not that it's not realistic, or it's not some romanticized tale. It's that I don't revel in it's rampant theme of sleaziness, in real life I stay away from the major scumbags. I don't begrudge people their vices, but when they cross a line, I cut them off from me too. And in the real world, those who learn to conquer their vices or at least limit them, who end up the happiest too. Thus the theme of most faery tales. The fact is, that GRR Martin's story is too much in the opposite direction from faery tales to be realistic. It's depressing and infuriating. He is an exceedingly good writer, I like everything about the way he writes, I just don't like a lot of what he writes about. And again, the TV shows don't bother me near so much, perhaps it's because I don't have spend nearly so much time with characters like Joffrey & Cersei.

How many of the books have you read?

You seem to be fixated on the deaths of the more likeable characters and ignoring when the less liked characters have met their comeuppance.

I've read them all. The thing is that I prefer a character driven story, which this IS, but it's driven by characters I don't like. Jamie doesn't fit the bill for me, not yet at least. Breanne of Tarth I liked, but TBH I don't remember where the story left off with her anymore. Sansa bores me to tears as does Littlefinger and Theon. Most of these other characters don't really affect me in anyway. Samwell is kinda funny, it's amazing to me that he's lived as long as he has. He'll probably survive the whole way just so Martin can prove a point. Danearys... /shrug, whatever. I love her story and what's happening with her, but I could take her or leave her as a character. I think that's sort of a key thing with Martin too. I may hate a lot of his characters, but I DO like the story, and that's why I keep reading I think.

Have any of you ever wrote a book? I ask because of how much you're all into creative writing on here.

For example a book like Fifty Shades Of Grey is 85,000 words which is approx 25 chapters at 3,400 words. That's huge and then books like Harry Potter are into the six figures.

Speaking of 50 Shades I avoided the fuss for ages but saw the trailer the other day and having been a fan of Dakota Johnson since she was in Ben and Kate which should never have been cancelled after one series i've been reading the book at my favourite free online book website

http://www.onereads.org/fifty-shades-grey

I've only read the first two chapters so far and the book is more comical than romantic to me so far at least. Chapter 1 the mate of Ana is ill so Ana goes off on her behalf to interview Mr Grey and basically swoons over him from first eye contact like she's never seen a man before. Chapter 2 he comes into the hardware store Ana works at and basically she swoons some more and dumb bitch thinks he's come to buy cable, tape etc because he's good at DIY LOL

Nope, My old man is currently writing a book, he's about 25000 words in.

I am writing a Manga First chapter is due for release in January. I would like to write a book it's just I don't know for sure what to write about as I change my mind all the time which is why the Manga is perfect as I can switch between story lines and such.

My Girlfriend was into that 50 Shades of Grey and she is looking forward to the Movie. I tried to read it but got about 50 pages in and just put it back on the bookshelf and couldn't be arsed to read anymore of that Dreich (Scottish word meaning drivel). She said it's basically porn that women can read without being judged.
Y'know what?....It's really fucking hot here in Africa. Who knew?....Well me, I have been doing this for almost 5 years

Give it a go. Can always whack it on Amazon and maybe make yourself a bit of cash from sales.

It doesn't seem well laid out. But now she's sold more books than JK Rowling and has a movie coming out to bump her bank balance I don't think she cares.

He's writing about his life from Joining the Army up present day as he is now a private overseas contractor - Like me but he earns a shitload more than me because of his trade. He has a publisher interested in it already, same people that published his poetry

My Brother in law and I are doing it as a joint enterprise we are speaking to some cottage publishers and seeing if any are interested, They all wanna see the first chapter drawn out before they will agree to take us on. I do the story my brother in law does the art.

Fuck it if I could make what she has I don't think I would give a shiot what anyone thinks about it either

I'm about 97,000 words into a book, but I started a little too young and undereducated, and now that I'm faced with a re-write, I'm not interested.
