As noted, WWE is changing Apollo Crews ring name to simply Apollo, as seen by his updated official profile page in the roster section of WWE.com.

Apollo, who joins Adrian Neville, Antonio Cesaro, Alexander Rusev, Big E. Langston, Luke Harper, Rick Rowan, Elias Samson as recent WWE talents who had their names shortened, reportedly due to a recent tragedy.

The folks at Sportskeeda are reporting that WWE confirmed in an email that the name change was done due to a tragic high school shooting last week in Parkland, Florida.

The gunman of the shooting, 19 year-old Nikolas Cruz, killed 17 students and teachers with an AR-15 rifle in one of the worst tragedies in recent memory. WWE apparently wanted to avoid any confusion with the Cruz name, despite it being spelled differently than Crews. The decision was reportedly made by Vince McMahon himself to drop Crews from Apollo Crews' name.

Shit idea. Not even spelt the same. Vince should instead have a word with his best mate about the shit gun laws.

What next? Are Penelope, Terry and Tom going to be known by just their first names, incase we think any of them are to do with the shooter too?

One word names are usually bland, as is the case in this instance.

I'm going to have to agree with you again, Adders. These one word names and random dropping of a surname or first name are asinine and dumb; and I still consider their full names to be the wrestler's names.

As for Apollo himself; he is sound in the ring but I have a hard time attaching myself to guys who seem to flip around for no reason other than to flip. I am not by any means saying Crews is a spot monkey, as he is not. He can wrestle. But I am not a fan of the style. I give much credit to Corey Graves at the broadcasting booth who presented a good kayfabe explanation of how a flip gives the splash more impact to the opponent.

Still, I'm not a fan of the in ring style and quite frankly I prefer Cedric Alexander. That being said, I do like Titus and Brooke.

He seems to be getting a slight push in the mid-card, he's definitely more prominent on tv than he has ever been before at present.

I actually enjoyed the segment with Apollo and Lashley, here Apollo showed personality and got a solid crowd reaction it was entertaining stuff and got some good heat on Lashley.

The match was pretty watchable too with Apollo getting some decent offence in and looking very strong in defeat only losing via a distraction.

The fans are slowly getting more into Apollo now he's shown a bit more personality on the mic and he's getting the ring time to show what he can do.

Until Lashley sucked all the energy out of the segment, I agree that Apollo was pretty watchable. That's the first I've seen of him being anything more than an afterthought either on the main roster or in NXT. Shame he's going to get swallowed up by the black hole of charisma that is Bobby Lashley.

I enjoyed this match, MVP cut a good promo before the match and proved he's still a solid worker, I think he is well placed as a enhancement talent for WWE and perhaps a mouthpiece for a younger talent.

I'm hoping this could be the beginning of a push for Apollo and isn't just a case of heating him up a little for the Money in the Bank match. He's paid his dues now and I've always thought with his look and ring skill he should be used far better.

Apollo has just failed to show enough character/personality so far to really get over, his stint with Titus O'Neill didn't really help him at all. I would be interested to see him turn heel and show a different side to his character.

Dirt sheets are reporting that Apollo Crewes is the latest project for Paul Heyman, he apparently requested to have him moved to Raw and is set to push him as his recent strong showing against Aleister Black and then qualifying for Money in the Bank may suggest.

I've always liked Crewes, he was a indie standout and as soon as he made his debut in NXT I was impressed with his athletic big man ring work and he has a decent look. His downside has always been his lack of charisma and personality and he's too smiley and generic as a babyface. He may have some hidden personality that he's just not had the chance to show yet but I remember reports saying promos were not his forte.

It's always been disappointing to me that just with his look and ring work alone he's only ever been used as a enhancement talent so far in WWE so I hope they are going to give him a chance now.

I really think the best move is to drop the smiley persona, if Heyman is so high on him maybe have him manage him and try and capture some of the magic he did with Lesnar. Have Apollo be more of a silent destroyer with Paul E doing the talking and Apollo being a much darker and more serious character than he currently is.

Quote As many of you know by now, Apollo Crews was pulled from the WWE Money in the Bank ladder match. While WWE claimed he suffered a “knee injury”, this is all a storyline that was planned in advance and it may be leading to him returning as a heel. There is some talk that he’ll be joining MVP’s new stable that already features Brendan Vink and Shane Thorne.

While these plans are not confirmed by any means, they have been discussed backstage in recent weeks. Of course, Vince McMahon changes his mind on a nearly daily basis so we’ll have to see how things evolve.

Crews’ storyline was always meant to be that he’d qualify for the Money in the Bank match but not compete in it. Of course, that led to the return of AJ Styles.

Finally, I've been saying they should try this with Apollo for ages. His generic smiley white meat babyface persona wasn't getting him anywhere and with his look and ring skill he has the potential to be so much more than a enhancement guy.

MVP is a great choice as a mouth piece too as he is one of the best promo guys of the past couple of decades. Maybe we will now see a modern day WWE version of the Beat Down Clan.

Raw definitely seems to be the brand to be on for overlooked talent right now.

I can see him being the E version of Moose in Impact Wrestling when he's turned heel.

Have him come out thinking he's the best person on the show with a wacky dress sense with a touch of Naitch.

That will be far better than anything he's ever done to date.
