Oh please......that had nothing to do with it.  He turned it down because he was offered more money to stay where he is at.

After wrestling with the decision all week, UFC's Mike Goldberg has opted to reject WWE's offer to replace Jim Ross. For the time being, the former hockey commentator will remain with Ultimate Fighting Championship.

WWE had originally planned to swiftly turn over Jim Ross' position as RAW's play-by-play announcer to Goldberg; Ross was to become the lead announcer for WWE.com Unlimited. With Goldberg not presently interested in joining WWE, it remains to be seen how those plans will change.

wwe probably only went after him because he commentates on spike tv ufc coverage and they want to ruin there competition. thus they offered him the job of lead announcer to presuade him. but i reckon he noticed that they wasnt after him because they was a fan of his work. i mean they could have put him on smackdown and moved michael cole to raw.

As everyone knows by now, Jim Ross was fired on-air last night at RAW. This was likely Ross' last broadcast ever as Vince is very set on replacing JR in return for a much younger, hipper, announce team. There are absolutely no plans to use Ross at PPV events either. The backstage feeling at RAW was that the guys were just in awe of what was happening. It doesn't make sense to many wrestling circles but then again it doesn't need to as only one man makes the final decisions.

Quote Source: The Observer

To update the Joey Styles situation further, he was flown out today to meet with Vince McMahon and Kevin Dunn about taking over the lead announce position on RAW. There is talk that if all goes well he could debut as soon as tonight's PPV. This is pretty shocking as just a few days ago the WWE office had no interest in using him. Styles has also always said he would never return to wrestling full-time and would always work for his website.

The feeling now is that they will drop the Jim Ross storyline due to the Steve Austin falling out. Jim Ross' job will not be on the line during tonight's PPV.

Styles is now believed to be the only man WWE thinks can fill Ross' spot as they have not been impressed with The Coach.

Quote From WWE.com:

Earlier today, former ECW announcer Joey Styles was spotted backstage at Taboo Tuesday.

WWE.com: Why are you here and who invited you?
Joey Styles: I was invited by Kevin Dunn (Executive Vice President of WWE Television Production). Because Jonathan Coachman will be getting his head kicked in during his match tonight, there was an opening at the announce table, so I was brought in for the night to do play-by-play. Being a huge Internet wrestling fan, I couldnít think of anything that would be more fun than Taboo Tuesday Ė the interactive pay-per-view. I think itís a great idea to have fans pick the stipulations for the matches. Iím a little surprised the fans didnít get to choose an announcer for Taboo Tuesday, but I like to think that if fans did get to choose, they would have chosen me.

WWE.com: What do you think lead WWE to calling you?
Styles: Iím sure the decision to call me was made a few seconds after WWEís original choice realized he didnít know enough about professional wrestling to fill the shoes of Jim Ross, even for one night.

WWE.com: At this point, do you know if this is another ďone night standĒ for you? Or is this a permanent move for you into the RAW announce booth?
Styles: As far as I know, this is another one night stand, which is funny because I was never the most successful single person in the world. The only pickup line that ever worked for me was ďWill you marry me?Ē So Iíve now had two one night stands in one calendar year, which is probably more than I had in my entire single life.

WWE.com: At this point, has WWE told you anything about your future past Taboo Tuesday?
Styles: First of all, I want to say that I think Jim Ross was the greatest play-by-play man there has ever been in professional wrestling. I donít think anybody could fill his shoes, his hat or his headset. But Iíd like to think if somebody can, it would be me. It would be an honor. As far as I know, though, I was brought in for one evening because Coach cannot wrestle and do play-by-play at the same time, and some would argue that he canít do either. So Iím just here for the one night. Iíll be doing play-by-play tonight. Then Iíll be on a plane, going back to my anonymous career in advertising sales in Atlanta. While Iím here, though, Iíll be sure to check out catering. The cheese plate was exquisite in New York at One Night Stand. I canít wait to see what it looks like here in California.

WWE.com: What will it be like working with Jerry Lawler?
Styles: I have not seen The King since ECW Hardcore Heaven when he battled Tommy Dreamer. Iíve never had the opportunity to work with him in the broadcast booth. Iím looking forward to it because heís a lot of fun.

WWE.com: If you had to pick a broadcast partner, who would be your dream color man?
Styles: I would rather slide over and do color and sit beside Jim Ross. Heís the best thereís ever been. Seniority means something in this business and I would be honored to sit next to good olí Jim Ross.

WWE.com: Do you have any thoughts on the way that J.R. was let go?
Styles: I think it took great restraint on his part not to take a swing at the McMahons. Iíve got somewhat of an undeserved reputation of being a loose cannon, which is usually reserved for wrestlers. Iíve been put in some compromising positions. Iíve probably been beat up and bounced around as much as any other play-by-play man, but to take that much abuse by three members of that family after everything that has happened to him over the years, Iím surprised he didnít say ďto hell with my jobĒ and start swinging.

WWE.com: What have you been up to since One Night Stand?
Styles: About a year-and-a-half ago, I moved from my hometown in Stamford, Conn., coincidentally enough, and took a job with an advertising agency in Atlanta. Most people donít realize that ECW wasnít a full-time job for me. It looks like it is because youíre on TV once a week, but a lot of it was post-produced out of a studio in New York. So I always had a full-time job in advertising sales. When ECW ceased operations and I was unable to come to terms with WWE, I went back to my career.

So basically, Iím under contract now to WWE as the ECW announcer and Iím available at the companyís convenience. When they need me, they take the hammer and break the glass box that says ďin case of an emergency, and you need an announcer, break glass.Ē

Quote Source: PWTorch.com

Tonight is basically a tryout for Joey Styles. If he does well, then he'll likely be signed to a WWE deal to become the lead RAW announcer. Styles lived in Stamford, CT for years but recently relocated to Atlanta, GA to take up a full-time job in sales. The two sides would need to reach an agreement after tonight if all goes well.

Quote The word backstage at Taboo Tuesday is that Joey Styles will be announcing tonight as well as on RAW the next few weeks. As noted earlier, tonight is a test to see how Styles does. Some in the company are even saying it was a last minute attempt by WWE to try and garner some internet fans into purchasing the PPV. It'll be interesting to see if Styles sells his website, 1Wrestling.com or if WWE will let him continue operating the site. If they let him go with it, it'll be quite hypocritical considering the recent legal lawsuits filed against fan sites.

Quote There were said to be many people backstage who were wondering how Joey Styles would do with Vince McMahon yelling in his ear all night behind the headset. Styles is used to just going out there and calling the matches. He used to call ECW matches with input from Paul Heyman.

i think for his first wwe ppv joey did well. he is use to being more outspoken and he obviously aint that use to wwe ways. he seemed to sound genuinely interested when talking about the matches. and obviously he is better at play by play then coach is. if he really does start doing play by play on raw then that will be cool. but i cant see him liking having vince in his headset telling him what to say for two hours. hes the type of guy that would like more creative input.

Quote On a related note, many have been asking about the status of Joey Styles for RAW this Monday in Sheffield, England. From what is known following the Taboo Tuesday PPV, Styles agreed to work the November 7 and November 13 RAW events when WWE made the decision that Jerry Lawler and The Coach together wasn't working. Styles' appearances for WWE in the last few weeks have been considered a tryout or a "getting to know each other" time period. Other than that, nothing else was officially decided as Styles carries a full-time job in advertising in Atlanta. The WWE reportedly wanted to fly Styles to the UK for this week's RAW event, but there was said to be a conflict in Styles' schedule that would prevent it. From this point on, the general feeling is that some time of a deal will have to be worked out between Styles and WWE in order for him to leave his job in advertising for WWE full-time. If Styles appears on RAW this Monday, it more than likely means he reached a deal with the company. If he doesn't, it shouldn't be considered that he is officially done as it is possible a deal couldn't get talked about due to the passing of Eddie Guerrero and the company's busy overseas schedule.

if joey styles aint in the country then ill be disapointed. its inportant that hes on raw this week. yeah there has been teething problems with getting information wrong (not just styles). but that is bound to happen till all 3 get use to eachother. plus its vince feeding them the wrong information to say through there ear piece.

Dont think weve got anything to worry about with Joey styles ask me. if he didnt want to work for them then he wouldnt have helped out.  The wwe do make some bad mistakes but even they couldnt recognize that Joey is the answer to there problems its all about the money and if they would offer Mike Goldberg 500k then they should meat Styles asking price. the only worry is that they leave the king there just like jr hes had his day and should make way for the coach to be solo colour man.

Sorry but Vince does not sit back stage and tell them what to say.....he does occasionally make suggestions, but he does not sit at the gorilla postion with a mic and tell them what to say for the whole show.....in fact about 70% of the time Vince isn't even there.   The announcers have an outline to go by.   They even have rehersal time just like everyone else.  in the early days yes Vince did that alot....but not now.

what admin means is that the confusion over what number survivors it was and the date was being fed to them by vince. he didnt mean he is always in the gorilla position just that the embarassing mistakes they made that night were all cos of the big man for a change.

Quote Joey Styles is backstage at RAW and it appears he has signed a deal. The last two weeks (and Taboo Tuesday) were considered a tryout for him. Styles was on personal leave from his advertising job it Atlanta and was flown to the UK to call RAW tonight.

wooooo flown in just for raw after having time off from his dayjob. hopefully we will know more soon. but im hoping that hes signed a longterm contract for a couple of years. not long ago he used his own website to slag off wwe at every chance. using the "another reason ill never work for the wwe" line alllllll the time. money talks and now he looks a plonker. but glad hes sticking around.

Quote WWE paired up Tazz and Joey Styles for commentary during the Women's title match at Survivor Series. WWE is testing the announce booth now and there is no real permanent setup. There had actually been talk of moving Cole over to RAW before Styles came in. They also paired Coach and Michael Cole together as a 'test' during the Long vs. Bischoff match. It's interesting to note the 'ugly' jokes on Michael Cole who is known as a 'pretty boy' backstage but is liked by many of his peers.

Joey Styles has not been told by Vince McMahon what to say through the headsets during PPV's and RAW's. The Coach has Vince McMahon in his ear at all times feeding him lines. Vince also feeds Jerry Lawler lines at times but Styles is basically on his own which is what he prefers.

having not watched the ppv i dont know what these pairings sounded like. who did the commentary for the main event ? joey styles has it good not having vince in his ear like the other two do. i would have thought the styles and tazz pairing was better then the coach and cole paring though. i wouldnt put announcers on different shows because they are known for the shows they are on.
