Quote At WrestleMania 34, the 5th annual Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal will take place. There’s backstage talk of pushing the match this year due to HBO Sports’ documentary on Andre the Giant premiering just 2 days after WrestleMania 34.

WWE officials think they would be able to work on more projects with Bill Simmons (man behind the Andre documentary) & HBO Network if this Andre documentary draws strong viewership.

There have been talks of putting WWE Hall of Fame Class of 2018 inductee Bill Goldberg as a surprise participant in this year’s Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal match & most probably book him to win to push the importance of this match.

- originally from WWFOldSchool.com and picked up by various news sites.

I certainly wasn't expecting this and also understand wanting to push the match and make it seem like a bigger deal by booking bigger names to coincide with the Andre documentary.

However, I can't see what Goldberg winning would do or what benefit it would have.

Well, what benefit was there in Cesaro, Corbin or Mojo Rawley winning?

It's a pointless battle royal to cram some guys on the card and say they were part of Wrestlemania to their grandkids. In the grand scheme of things Goldberg appearing, let alone winning would be the best thing to ever happen in that match.

The match is literally just for the jobbers and a couple of midcard stars it does nothing for the winner it hasn't since it started Cesaro wasn't doing anything until he got teamed up with Sheamus, Big Show is Big Show, Baron Corbin was in low level feuds with Dolph Ziggler and other jobbers I can't remember, and Mojo Rowley is a jobber to the stars.

Goldberg being there and winning is more then fine in fact I wouldn't mind if a legend was to win it every year since it literally does nothing for anyone else to win it and they can all say that they have been in the ring with a hall of famer and one that I am sure a lot of them would love to work with.

I would prefer the match to be totally scrapped because it's a pointless match full of jobbers.

Less is more and I don't like that management try and find any possible way they can to fit as much of the talent on the card.

Wrestling at Wrestlemania should be something earned and to work towards, instead of being expected no matter where you are in a order of importance.

So much for Andres legacy then huh?

I say keep the match, but put it on before the final match of the night every year, and have everyone else that competed during the night in the match with a few extras. The winner gets to headline the following PPV with a championship match.

The Andre the Giant Battle Royal was designed as a way of getting mid-card and low-card talent a spot on the Wrestlemania card and to ensure they all get their Mania pay-day. I think this is a nice touch by WWE as even though everyone knows its a pointless jobber filled match at least all the talent involved get to be part of the big event and get a slice of the purse.

Cesaro and Baron Corbin both got pushes off the back of their wins, however Cesaro's push fizzled quickly and Corbin still struggles to gain acceptance from the fans. Big Show's win I think was a little reward for his years of service. Last year however Mojo winning was nothing more than a cheap celebrity plug due to his football buddy being in the crowd and getting involved as a result.

I have no problem with a legend like Goldberg winning this year, it will put some much needed spotlight on the match rather than it being a forgettable collection of jobbers fighting over a worthless trophy, it will also be a fitting tribute to Goldberg who goes into the Hall of Fame this year, being in a Battle Royal will be a good fit for Goldberg who is very limited with what he can do in the ring these days.

I like Rico's idea of making the match more of a big deal by putting something at stake, maybe they could take a page out of TNA's feast or fired match and have the winner draw at random either a World title, Intercontinental, US or Tag title shot.

Cesaro was paired with Heyman around the title of his battle royal win and he also had a shot at the WWE World Heavyweight Championship in the Elimination Chamber. He got a push and it's one of the reasons the fans are as behind him as they are now.

Gap in my history though, I'm watching that period in WWE history now.

Corbin was seriously put on the map by his win. After his feud with Ziggler he fooled around in the lower card and then put on an immense chairs match with Kalisto. Following that he had a big triple threat with Ziggler and Styles for the WWE title and competed in the Elimination Chamber. He also eliminated Strowman from the Rumble and would have had an IC title match on the mania main show if not for the decision to swap that match with the women's match.

That's a big push by any standards.

Mojo not so much but let's be fair, even WWE didn't see Jinder coming so Mojo lost the opponent for what would have been his first feud, then the heights of the tag division slowed his split from Ryder because there were better stories to tell.

Mojo Rawley: there are better stories to tell.

Big Show no idea but the guy deserved it.

I enjoy the battle royal to be honest. I've never predicted a winner and it is used as a platform, or at least that's the intention.

Between Andre's as a battle royal that doesn't mean anything and using Warrior's (albeit whitewashed) legacy as form of PR, I think it would be safe to say that WWE really doesn't give a damn about legacies.

It's pre-show filler at best and will stay that way until they finally make it mean something. Not a very strong line of winners for this particular event. Adding a retired guy to the list of winners isn't going to hurt it, but it's not going to be very beneficial either. Just continues to show WWE's preference to use nostalgia acts over their current roster.

What they should use this for this year is a platform for some of the NXT stars to move up to the main roster.

For me to make it a bit more prestigious, there should be some form of future title match in there for the winner - maybe a US or IC title match

Yeah or like I said a random drawing for a title match. The next night on Raw or Smackdown have the winner pick from a tumbler where it will be decided if he gets a World title, US, Intercontinental or Tag title shot. That way it allows plenty of storyline scenarios while allowing the Andre the Giant Battle Royal to serve some sort of purpose rather than just being a pointless match to get loads of unused talent on the card.

Like I've said though Goldberg winning is fine with me, at least this allows for a bit of nostalgia and the excitement and novelty of Goldberg in a match. To me that is preferable to another throwaway pointless battle royal full of mostly talent that no one cares about.
