Girl, two, killed by 8ft pet snake

Girl, two, killed by 8ft pet snake
A Burmese python has killed a two-year-old child in Florida
pa.press.net
An escaped 8ft Burmese python has strangled a two-year-old girl in her Florida bedroom.
Shaiunna Hare was already dead when paramedics arrived at about 10am on Wednesday, a Sheriff's Office spokesman said.
Charles Jason Darnell, the snake's owner and the boyfriend of Shaiunna's mother, discovered the snake missing from its terrarium and went to the girl's room, where he found it on the girl and bite marks on her head, Lt Bobby Caruthers said.
Darnell, 32, stabbed the snake until he was able to pry the child away.
"The baby's dead!" a sobbing caller from the house screamed to a 911 dispatcher in a recording. "Our stupid snake got out in the middle of the night and strangled the baby."
Authorities did not identify the caller and removed the person's name from the recording.
"She got out of the cage last night and got into the baby's crib and strangled her to death," the caller said.
Authorities removed the snake from the home in Oxford on Wednesday afternoon after obtaining a search warrant. Once outside the snake was placed in a bag then inside a dog crate, still alive.
Darnell did not have a permit for the snake, which would be a second-degree misdemeanour, said Joy Hill, a spokeswoman with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. He has not been charged, but Caruthers said investigators were looking into whether there was child neglect or if any other laws were broken.
Hill said the snake will be placed with someone who has a permit, pending an investigation into the girl's death.

The parents are completely to blame here for being so irresponsible. I like reptiles and ive kept several large snakes in the past and i would always advise people against keeping one that large if they have a very young child in the house, if they insist on having the snake i would suggest that they are extra carefull the snakes vivarium is secure and ideally situated in a room where the snake would be isolated should it escape and also somewhere the child will not go.
The snake was simply acting on its natural instincts.
This kind of thing really annoys me because so many people get exotic pets without doing proper research and planning in to the animals needs and they basically dont have a clue how to keep and maintain the animal and then tragic accidents like this happen.

Wow... that poor little girl! And, I do feel sorry for the snake because, as you said, it was just doing what was natural for it. If they wanted to keep the snake in the house, they should've been super OCD about making sure the kid's bedroom door was shut at night, just in case. Sad that a child's life had to be lost for them to get the clue.

I really feel sorry for the girl and yeah the snake went by its instincts, you cant really blame the snake here as it didnt know any better as thats what those types of pythons (is it?) do when they're in the wild, they kill there pray the way they did to that little girl.

Whoever fucking blames the snake is an idiot. I place the blame solely on the parents for letting an animal which DOESN'T know better, kill a two year old child.

The snake acted upon its own instincts, and saw a small, breathing object. Therefore it's naturally going to attack and/or attempt to kill said object,

Yeah Pythons(and the majority of non-venomous snakes)kill their prey prior to eating it by constriction where they usually grab the prey with a bite then coil their body around it crushing it, the more the prey breathes the tighter the snake constricts, death is acheived via suffocation, larger snakes are so powerfull the preys bones are often crushed during constriction.
Baring in mind the snake was around the girls neck and her breathing would have caused the snake to squeeze tighter she would have been strangled very quickly.

I do feel for the poor girl as this is a tragic accident, but as i said the entire reposibility lies entirely with the parents.

Damn all they had 2 say that the damn snake got out. Can I please give them the death penalty 4 saying that. They didn't have a permit 4 the snake so that should be some type of punishment given immediately. Hopefully they don't give us this investigation bullshit when everything is so fucking clear.

I agree with the statement that the parents are to blame, what really gets me is  what is a  2 year Old  doing with 8ft snake to begin with ? I feel sorry for the snake.  I have a friend who keeps snakes and he would be the first one to say You don't get a  2 year old a snake that is going to grow to at least 8ft . If You are going to get a snake for a  kid at least have the common sense to get a  grass snake which are small and  easy to keep .

Cheers

Yeah thats what is ridiculous about this, as i said ive kept snakes and their are plenty available that stay at much smaller sizes and would present no danger what so ever to a child.

Laws are obviously different in the states because over here you dont need a permit to keep a Burmese Python, you only need a licence if you are keeping snakes which are DWA(dangerous wild animal)listed which is generally just venomous snakes.
